Be fair!

I don't know why that person gave it only one star. But since they're the only person who rated it, that's what you see automatically, right? No fair. Anyhow, the diagrams are clear, the typeface is easy to read, and the text seems understandable & comprehensive. I'm no expert on diagramming techniques, so don't weigh my input too heavily. :)

Yes, okay, it's a little out of date. It's still the most comprehensive book around for serious beginners. Yes, these days you need to understand UML, too. But you're not going to have a context for UML unless you understand the older diagramming techniques, and this is where you can best learn them.

Critical for Systems Analysts

I've had this boook since it came out in the mid 1980's. Most (if not all), of the diagramming techniques described continue to be needed to design and build long-term, enterprise scale systems. The techniques have nothing to do with platform or delivery mechanism. It should be considered required reading.
