About the Author

Russ Hibbeler graduated from the University of Illinois-Urbana with a B.S. in Civil Engineering (major in structures) and an M.S. in Nuclear Engineering. He obtained his Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University.

Hibbeler’s professional experience includes postdoctoral work in reactor safety and analysis at Argonne National Laboratory, and structural work at Chicago Bridge and Iron, Sargent and Lundy, Tucson. He has practiced engineering in Ohio, New York, and Louisiana.

He has taught at the University of Illinois-Urbana, Youngstown State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Union College. Hibbeler currently teaches at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

An excellent book

Having read and used several books in this area, my favorite one is this book. While studying for my PE last year in Mechanical Engineering, I tried to use Gere and Timoshenko, but found it to be difficult to read. I was familiar with R.C. Hibbeler's Engineering Mechanics books, and liked his writing style and resulting "ease of presenting technical engineering topics in a readable format with many examples and practical problems." So I got a copy of this book and found it to be very well organized, very readable, very good figures and illustrations, and very practical and useful. So I would highly recommend this book to all, along with R.C. Hibbeler's other books.

Best textbook I've ever had

Simple, concise, great examples, great illustrations, great problems. The style is: present a topic briefly, derive equation(s) quickly, show 3-4 examples of using said equation(s), give a couple dozen problems, and move right on to the next topic. Thanks Mr. Hibbeler, for making engineering students' lives just a bit easier.

Okay option for cheaper textbook...

I purchased the paperback economy edition of this book. That means it came in black and white and without a hardcover. If you are looking for a cheaper purchasing option for your book, then look no further than this.

It is of note that this economy edition foregoes the tables of values that is included in the full hardcover version. If you intend to use those tables, you should not purchase this book. There are also the occasional issues that come with a black and white version of a color book; some problems will reference a colored line or such, and you can't discern what they are talking about.

As far as being a good teaching tool for learning the basics of mechanics of materials: I don't find this book to be horrible, but it definitely isn't a super useful teaching tool.

Comprehensive book on the real castles of Ireland

Many books exist that are titled as being the castles of Ireland and in reality are coffee table books on the rebuilt banquet venues on scant castle remains or grand manor homes. While those have their place, this book remains on the subject and with complete authority on castles~ despite the opening disclosure of the author. McNeill has done his homework with prodigious diagrams throughout. Heartily and highly recommended by The Castle Lady !

The authors use non-traditional symbolism and do not always define symbols used. For example,
what is wring with the way Papoulis and Peebles define various statistical operators?
Changing what is so widely accepted does not make your presentation better. It just takes
longer to understand background subject matter and introduces unnecessary confusion into your final
topic - Kalman filters.

About the Author
Clem Bartollas is a professor of Sociology at the University of Northern Iowa. He holds a B.A. from Davis and Elkins College, a B.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary, an S.T.M. from San Francisco Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in sociology with a special emphasis in criminology from The Ohio State University. He has taught at Pembroke State University, Sangamon State University, and the University of Northern Iowa, where he has received a number of honors, including Distinguished Scholar, the Donald McKay Research Award, and the Regents' Award for Faculty Excellence. Dr. Bartollas is the author of numerous articles and more than 30 texts.

Good stories, poor execution

I purchased this book for a college course and ended up reading most (but not all) of the entries. All of the entries I read were interesting and each had a unique voice. The execution, however, was poor. Often they lacked a clear point. They were written as narratives, often detailing life stories in a few pages. Each narrative included several questions, all of which were obvious. It reminded me of the questions in high school English books. Basically, you could read the questions and answer them without ever reading the narratives. They didn't make you think.

As a college-level course book, I would not recommend this. Unless you must read this book for a class, don't purchase it. And to all the college Professors out there: there are better books than this. Books that will actually engage your students and require them (and you) to think. Please use those books.

About the Author

Wanda Dann is the Director of the Alice Project and Associate Teaching Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research has encompassed program visualization and object-oriented and event-driven programming. She has published papers on the use of program visualization in computer science education for SIGCSE, the Computer Science Education Journal, and related publications. She has been co-PI for three NSF-funded projects. She is an active member of the ITiCSE Visualization Working Group, studying the effectiveness of visualization in computer science education. She has taken on a major leadership role in the international computer science education community, serving as SIGCSE 2004 Program co-Chair and SIGCSE 2005 Symposium co-Chair.

Stephen Cooper is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and the Director for the Center for Visualization at Saint Joseph's University.¿He taught previously at Rivier College, serving as Computer Science program director. He has also worked at IBM as a systems programmer. Dr. Cooper's research interests lie in the semantics of programming languages as well as in program visualization. He is the author or co-author of a dozen articles, and has been the principal investigator for several National Science Foundation and private grants.

Randy Pausch was a Professor of Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction and Design at Carnegie Mellon, and co-founder of the Entertainment Technology Center. He also served as the Director of Carnegie Mellon's Alice research group, where he oversaw the development of Alice. He was a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator and a Lilly Foundation Teaching Fellow. In 1995, he spent a Sabbatical with the Walt Disney Imagineering Virtual Reality Studio and consulted with Imagineering on interactive theme park attractions, particularly for the "DisneyQuest" virtual-reality based theme park. Dr. Pausch authored or co-authored five books and over 60 reviewed journal and conference proceedings articles, and his primary interests were human-computer interaction, entertainment technology and undergraduate education.

lovely innovation in teaching programming

In a way, this is a tricky book for me to review. I learnt programming with Fortran on punch cards [remember them?]. Then later gravitated to other languages like Pascal, C and Java. But it was only in the 90s that languages started coming out with graphics built in. Prior to that, it was mostly text and binary Input/Output. That was our User Interface, shocking as it might seen to some of you. So there were always abstractions in learning a language, from the very start.

The authors of this book are spot on in saying that there has been little or no change in the teaching of programming to beginners, in the last 30 years. The languages being taught may have changed. Some are now object oriented, and have graphics libraries. But the basic pedagogy has remained constant all this time. So for example the classic "Pascal: User Manual and Report" from 1980 and a current book on Java have this in common.

The innovation offered by Alice is a stark contrast indeed. Alice lets you learn [or teach] a special programming language that manipulates objects in a three dimensional world. The emphasis is on the object-oriented nature of Alice. While other languages use the metaphor of OO mapping to and from real world objects, Alice gives a literal visual mapping that students can readily comprehend. Alice removes the middleman metaphor.

Interestingly, the authors suggest that Alice shifts some of the mental effort from the student's cognition to her perceptual [visual] system. Her visual incoming bandwidth is so large that visual changes can be readily understood.

The authors cite studies that show a faster uptake by students using Alice, compared to students without Alice. And more girls seem to go further with their programming. One could wonder if this ties into other studies suggesting that boys have [slightly] better abstract spatial understanding. By reducing this need, does Alice make programming more accessible to girls?

Alice has several niceties that aid in its usage. Especially useful is the lack of syntax issues. The essentially menu or icon driven implementation means that a student does not have to type in syntax. Hence avoiding a common source of errors. For students with a limited attention span, this removes a big source of frustration.

To be sure, Alice is just meant as a teaching language. Students are expected to graduate onto more realistic languages. But Alice can help those delicate cases of newcomers to programming retain some knowledge, and possibly even take more advanced courses. Here, the authors point out that an important special usage is for a course aimed at students who will not be programmers. That will be their first and only programming course. The teaching of such a course is important, and Alice might help.

If this book is well received, then a companion book would be helpful. The current book is meant for an instructor, though some students could certainly use it. What is needed is a simpler book, aimed perhaps at the primary school level, for the student reader. Maybe Dann et al are already working on that?

Used it as textbook. Excellent!

"One of Alice's real strengths is that it has been able to make abstract concepts concrete in the eyes of first- time programmers. " - Forward to the book.

I used this book as a textbook in a one-semester introduction to programming course in my high school. I intend to use it again next year. Here is why:

Each chapter begins with a motivational overview of the chapter's topic and end with exercises and projects. Storyboards are used to provide an algorithmic step-by-step description of the example animation. Screenshots of code and visual setting allowed students to recreate and closely follow the covered topic.

Student had their copies of the book open next to their workstations. Throughout the course, they were focused, on task and having fun. This made my experience teaching the course very rewarding. Answers to end of chapter exercises, projects and instructional support material are available to instructors on [..]

With no hesitation I give it 5 stars.

Good for Students - Not So Good for Casual Use

If you're already teaching or taking a course in Alice, you'll at least need access to this book. Being by the developers and also first to market - it is the standard text. As a text, it's also very good - but also focused on teaching programming principles, not doing animations.

If you've never heard of Alice or just have a general interest in it's capabilities, I'd suggest you download the program from the web first (it's free from CMU) and see what you think of it. At least the first few chapters are almost too easy to read. It is easy to dismiss much of what is written as common knowledge but it is still worth the read. Much of this book comes across as common sense but a deeper examination of the material will help new interns with their placements.

Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences fro Nova University. Bob is most energized by teaching mathematics and has taught a variety of mathematics courses at Miami-Dade College for nearly 30 years. He has received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College, and was among the first group of recipients at Miami-Dade College for an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. Great book to learn from but poorly put together

Mr. Blizter does a great job explaining everything in such detail that anyone should be able to understand the topic. My problem is the book is falling apart at the bind. It is not put together as well as it should be for a product that costs over a hundred dollars. The book is always put in a safe place where nothing can mess with it and it is not thrown around or bent in any way. I open my book today to study and it seperates at the bind.

This is a dissapointing product in terms of material quality. The inside is a great learning tool for College algebra and I recomend it only if they don't skimp on quality.

I hate Algebra. Had to buy this for a class, and found out how much algebra classes have changed over the years. Lots of cds with work-along tutorials, very easy-to-understand guides to show how work was done. Excellent study guide!
