Software Corrected for the 11th Edition-- ignore old reviews!

I've taught both MBA and Master's in Management classes online and physically at MIT, Harvard (GE Crotonville) and Phoenix State University. There are a group of about 3-5 texts that are now the most popular for graduate Quantitative Analysis (QA). These include the Swift text (most popular in Europe) at from $40 to $80 US (Quantitative Methods: For Business, Management and Finance), the Render Quantitative Analysis for Management text (Quantitative Analysis for Management (11th Edition)), $175 for the 11th edition, and the very thorough but NOT for self study Anderson text (Quantitative Methods for Business (with Printed Access Card)) for $250.

QA is a really tough course for people with less math background such as liberal arts, nursing, etc. students going for an MBA, and a bit easier for math and engineering majors in undergrad, because it involves modeling, using a lot of fairly advanced math. Typical QA courses include linear programming (not really linear, and not really programming-- it is about objectives and constraints stated algebraically to find "optimal" graphic or corner solutions to problems such as mixing, profit maximization, or cost minimization); queueing problems; statement analysis; Decision analysis; Project Management; Forecasting; Inventory Control; Logistics; Markov Analysis; Stats; Integer/ nonlinear/ goal programming; regression modeling; simulation; probability, and possibly some econometrics. Most grad (MBA) courses don't go as far as differential equation modeling (frequent models in physics, biosciences, ecology, etc).

The Swift and Render texts are the most popular, and the Anderson text a distant third according to publisher's (QA!) data on course use and sales. Both Swift and Render are frequently zinged in reviews for broken or less useful software and models, but this is an unfair criticism. Swift gives numerous (although London oriented) model examples, and Render has their own internet models available. The reason both of these criticisms are unfair is that there are numerous plug ins for Excel that do all the analysis, statistics, programming solutions, etc. you will need regardless of which text you use. The Library Picks team chose Render as the top pick, but due to expense, if you're doing self study, Swift is also a good bet.

If the included websites, plug ins, templates and downloads aren't working for you from a software/ modeling viewpoint, here is a brief list of outstanding Excel options that will do the same thing, many for free:

These will take care of the problems metioned by some reviewers that it is hard to stay up to date on models. In particular, Microsoft has now migrated their SQL server business analysis package to a new language called DAX in the FREE Excel plug in PowerPivot. These plug ins, many free on the web, will work perfectly with the examples in Swift and Render so you don't have to sweat the included QA software if it crashes.

One caveat: many reviews complain about QA software with "bugs" when in fact it is the reviewer's computer at fault. To run modern QA programs with lots of modeling, you need a modern dual core processor with at LEAST 8 gig of ram, preferably 12 or 16. The reason for this is that with pipelining, the old "math coprocessor" hardware has given way to sharing between CPU and GPU for floating point, and recent software-- even SPSS -- will crash older machines or appear to be buggy. Excel with a plug in also is a great answer to this, because you can get away with much less power if your machine is already doing well with Excel. PowerPivot is intensive, but only if you have huge amounts of data. The typical mixing problem is no problem even with a computer that's say, post 2009.

Introduction

We used this book in my "Operations analysis"-class, and it's a great introduction to the subjects discussed. Some very basic probability for estimating values and descision theory. Some regression in addition to other forecasting methods. Good sections on linear and integer programming, and also basic queuing models. Markov analysis is about as far as this book goes, and it basically just touches upon all the subjects in order to make the reader grasp the basic ideas.

One minus is the Windows-only software, no Mac-support there, but that only meant that I had to use Excel, which imo helped me gain a better understanding of the subjects, as I had to formulate all the spreadsheets myself instead of just feeding numbers into the QM-package, which imo seems like a total waste of a chance to learn. Anyway, most areas are covered with respect to both QM and Excel, which makes the non-existant Mac-support bareable.

About the Author

Bruce Colbert is the Director of the Allied Health Department at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He holds a Master’s in Health Education and Administration, has authored four books, written several articles, and given over 175 invited lectures and workshops at both the regional and national level. Many of his workshops provide teacher training involving techniques to make the health sciences engaging and relevant to today’s students. In addition, he does workshops on developing effective critical and creative thinking, stress and time management, and study skills. He is an avid basketball player, even after three knee surgeries, which may indicate he has some learning difficulties.

 

Jeff Ankney is the Director of Clinical Education for the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Respiratory Care program where he is responsible for the development and evaluation of hospital clinical sites. In the past, Jeff has served as a public school teacher, Assistant Director of Cardiopulmonary Services, Program Coordinator of Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and a member of hospital utilization review

and hospital policy committees. He is a consultant on hospital management and pulmonary rehabilitation concerns. Jeff was also the recipient of the American Cancer Society Public Education Award.

 

Karen Lee is an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, where she teaches all the anatomy courses, including Anatomy and Physiology for Nursing and Allied Health students. She presents regularly at scientific conferences

and has published several articles on crustacean physiology and behavior. An active member of the Council on Undergraduate Research, she is also the chair of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown’s annual undergraduate symposium.

An excellent Introduction to this subject matter!

This is a very well-written text. As I have read through the book I usually supplement what I read with video that I find on youtube; this helps to re-enforce what I read. The text is written in simple to understand words. The quizzes throughout the chapters are nice.

And the DVD works fine, but there are errors throughout the disc. There are obvious mistakes in how the quizzes and such were done. But the video explanations of procedures and stuff are ok. This book needs a better DVD. The DVD was made poorly. Youtube is probably a lot better. Search youtube for companion videos. Yes there are lots of bad videos on youtube, but there are also some really great ones. There is a youtube channel called: khanacademy. Look it up. His videos are extremely accurate and he makes them funny too.

The only negative I can think of is of the style of book. Being that this is a school text, I feel that tit would of been better if it was done as a hardback type of book instead of paperback.

Non-functioning DVD

The DVD that comes with the textbook did not work - either on a PC or MAC. The company from which I purchased the book would not, or could not, remedy the problem. So if you buy this book, you may have problems viewing the DVD which is an integral part of the material.

Written like a Technical Book

The book is poorly constructed. Pages fall out easily. Plenty of examples. Ideas and concepts explained in detail. Some problems were explained in the examples, some aren't so you'll have to do research outside the book to get some answers. Assumes that you have some previous knowledge/background in electronics so the reading is at an intermediate level. The writing is very technical and it is easy to get confused and bored. I feel that the way it was written is a little too technical and the information was very dry. It was definitely not explained in a manner that makes concepts easy to understand which made reading a chapter a tiresome process. Not very fun to read but I did learn a lot from it.

Great Resource - Kept this one after the course was over

Excellent book for the technician. The authors actually explain what a device does instead of the usual "...the majority carriers can be found..." gobbledygook most EE texts are filled with. Some folks are only interested in learning what a device does and how to implement it, not necessarily build one from scratch. A very good survey of technical devices and applications suitable for a freshman/sophmore course.

Jeffrey A. Hoffer (hoffer@udayton.edu) is the Sherman -- Standard Register Professor of Data Management in the MIS, Operations Management, and Decision Sciences Department at the University of Dayton. He received a PhD from Cornell University in 1973 and was on the faculties of Case Western Reserve University and Indiana University before joining UD. He is a founder of the INFORMS College on Information Systems, the International Conference on Information Systems (and its conference chair in 1985), and the Association for Information Systems. He is author of many scholarly publications in the areas of database management, data warehousing, systems analysis, strategic systems planning, and human-computer interaction. He is co-author of several leading textbooks: "Modern Database Management," "Modern Systems Analysis and Design," "Essentials of Systems Analysis and Design," "Object-Oriented Systems Analysis and Design," and "Managing Information Technology: What Managers Need to Know," all published by Prentice-Hall. Or what managing IT used to be

I like the book because it tells so well where the Information technology is coming from. A strong plus is the excellent collection of case studies provided. This is the best part of the book. By themselves, they are worth the purchase of the book.
Part I of the book, is a review of the technology base and provides the MIS literacy required for the rest of the text. For a current practionner, it can be skipped over without missing much.
Part II presents the application of IT. It covers all the bases but would benefits by an update to include the most recents developments. Particularly, the e-commerce section is too general to be very useful in this new century.
Part III covers the acquisition process very well.
Finally Part IV would be a good introduction to another book about strategic planning for IT.
Overall a good textbook for a would be Manager in a fast moving field.

Only buy it if your class requires it - this isn't learning material.

As another reviewer noted, this book is horribly inaccurate in many places. Let's take for example, on page 88 the authors manage to completely confuse the OSI model with the TCP/IP protocol, and then goes on to say we don't use the OSI model in the networking field.

First of all, in the networking world there are two reference models we use to describe how networks communicate - the TCP model and the OSI model. We almost always use the OSI model and rarely if ever the TCP model in the real world - strike one. Second, they refer to it as the protocol when they are discussing reference models. Yes, TCP/IP is the name of the protocol suite that devices use to talk to one another (which actually encompasses a bunch of other protocols as well even though they aren't mentioned in the name) but don't muddle it with the TCP/IP model which is rarely used conceptually for tasks like developing and troubleshooting - the OSI model is the gold standard for that.

Earlier before that they claim that Bill Gates said we wouldn't need more than 640k memory - Bill Gates never actually said this - it's just an urban myth that keeps repeating over and over. You'd figure a professional publisher would catch that, but they didn't.

Also look at page 252, they friggin cite wikipedia of all things. Nobody anywhere ever cites wikipedia in a properly researched document, let alone a college textbook. Oh and they seem to often confuse the terms tablet computer with notebook computer.

If your college course requires you to buy this textbook you'll probably need it to either answer questions or read the case studies. But beyond that, I wouldn't use this book for any actual learning as if you aren't already well versed in the subject matter, it could send you down the wrong path in many places.

You've got to be kidding me.

This is literally the worst textbook I've ever used in my entire academic career. This book is jam-packed with jargon ("utilize"), acronyms (e.g.,"ERP," a term that the book does a poor job defining), and slashes. By slashes I mean, do you know how IT consultants love to use two synonymous words when one would suffice? For example: "I love/like to go jogging/running to the store/market."
My MIS professor was a moron, however, so it's understandable that he would choose this book. IF YOU ARE A PROFESSOR WHO IS NOT A MORON, DO NOT MAKE YOUR STUDENTS SUFFER THROUGH THIS BOOK. Thanks.

Complicated for the sake of being complicated

The chapters are short roughly 20 pages each, and apparently to make up for that the author makes sure to barrage you with tons of mathematical equations apparently to give the book substance. Frustration really sets in once you understand what these mathematical equations mean and you realize there were a million different ways the author could have made the concepts and the mathematical formulas simpler for students. In my opinion this is another case where due to tradition and laziness on the part of professors John Hull books have been become the go to books for options, and that's a shame.

About the Author
Benton attended Pace University.

Robert DiYanni is Professor of English at Pace University, Pleasantville, New York, where he teaches courses in literature, writing, and humanities. He has also taught at Queens College of the City University of New York, at New York University in the Graduate Rhetoric Program, and most recently in the Expository Writing Program at Harvard University. He received his B.A. from Rutgers University (1968) and his Ph.D. from the City University of New York (1976). Robert DiYanni has written articles and reviews on various aspects of literature, composition, and pedagogy. His books include Literature: Reading, Fiction, Poetry, Drama and the Essay; The McGraw-Hill Book of Poetry; Women s Voices; Like Season d Timber: New Essays on George Herbert; and Modern American Poets: Their Voices and Visions (a text to accompany the Annenberg-funded telecourse, Voices and Visions). With Kraft Rompf, he edited The McGraw-Hill Book of Poetry, (1993) and The McGraw-Hill Book of Fiction (1995). With Pat Hoy, he edited Encounters: Readings for Inquiry and Argument (1997).

As in our First Edition of Arts and Culture, we provide in this Second Edition an introduction to the world's major civilizations—to their artistic achievements, their history, and their cultures. Through an integrated approach to the humanities, Arts and Culture offers an opportunity to view works of art, listen to music, and read literature in historical and cultural contexts.

Works of art from different cultures reveal common human experiences of birth and death, love and loss, pleasure and pain, hope and frustration, elation and despair. Study of the humanities—literature, philosophy, history, religion, and the arts—reveals what others value and believe, inviting each of us to consider our personal, social, and cultural values in relation to those of others.

In studying the humanities, we focus our attention on works of art that reflect and embody the central values and beliefs of particular cultures and specific historical moments. In our approach we consider the following questions:

What kind of artwork is it? To what artistic category does it belong? These questions lead us to consider a work's type.

Why was the artwork made? What was its function, purpose, or use? Who was responsible for producing it? Who paid for or commissioned it? These questions lead us to consider the context of a work.

What does the work express or convey? What does it reveal about its creator? What does it reveal about its historical and social context? These questions lead us to considerations of a work's meaning.

How was the artwork made or constructed? This question leads us to consider technique.

What are the parts or elements of a work of art? How are these parts related to create a unified artwork? These questions lead us to considerations of formal analysis, understanding the ways the artwork satisfies aesthetically.

What social, cultural, and moral values does the work express, reflect, or embody? This question leads us to consider the social, cultural, and moral values of an artwork.

In Arts and Culture, we highlight the individual artistic qualities of numerous works, always in view of the cultural worlds in which they were created. We discuss each work's significance in conjunction with the social attitudes and cultural values it embodies, without losing sight of its individual expression and artistic achievement.

Two important questions underlie our choice of works in Arts and Culture: (1) What makes a work a masterpiece of its type? (2) What qualities of a work of art enable it to be appreciated over time? These questions imply that certain qualities appeal to something fundamental and universal in all of us, no matter where or when we may live. There are the aesthetic principles and predilections that link all of us together.

MAKING CONNECTIONS

We believe that a study of the humanities involves more than an examination of the artistic monuments of civilizations past and present. In our view, it also involves a consideration of how forms of human achievement in many times and places echo and reinforce, alter and modify each other. An important aspect of humanities study involves seeing connections among the arts of a given culture and discovering relationships between the arts of different cultures. We have highlighted three forms of connections that are especially important:

Interdisciplinary connections among artworks of an individual culture

Cross currents among artworks of different cultures

Transhistorical links between past and present, then and now

These forms of connection invite our readers to locate relationships among various humanities disciplines and to identify links between the achievements of diverse cultures. Discovering such connections can be intellectually stimulating and emotionally stirring since the forms of human experience reflected in the works of art of many cultures resonate with common human concerns. These artworks address social questions about who we are, philosophical questions about why we exist at all, and religious questions concerning what awaits us after death. These and other perennial questions and the varying perspectives taken on them have been central to every culture, and find expression in their arts. To highlight these questions, we have included-the following features throughout the text.

INTERDISCIPLINARY CONNECTIONS

For example, one type of interdisciplinary connection appears in the ways the music and architecture of Renaissance Florence were influenced by mathematical proportion and ancient notions of "harmony." Mathematics played a crucial role in all the arts of the Renaissance. Architects were guided in the design of their buildings by mathematical ratios and proportions; composers likewise wrote music that reflected mathematical ratios in both its melody and harmony.

CULTURAL CROSS CURRENTS

These reflect the ways artistic ideals, literary movements, and historical events influence the arts of other cultures. For example, Turkish military music found its way into the symphonies and piano compositions of Viennese composers, such as Mozart and Beethoven. Japanese woodblock prints influenced the art of the Impressionist painter Claude Monet and the Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. And the dynamic cybernetic sculpture of contemporary artist Wen-Ying Tsai weds western technology with ancient Chinese aesthetic principles.

Arts and Culture also considers connections between the past and present. Then & Now offers discussions of a wide range of subjects that form various types of historical bridges.

Arts and Culture includes a wide-ranging overview of the world's civilizations. In addition to Western culture, we examine the civilizations of Africa, China, India, Japan, Latin America, and Mesoamerica. We discuss the contributions of women, from the eleventh-century writings of the Japanese Murasaki Shikibu, the twelfth-century music of the German Hildegard of Bingen, and the fourteenthcentury writings of the Italian Christine de Pizan, to the Rococo art of the French painter Marie-Louise-Elisabeth Vigee-Le Brun and the numerous women writers, painters, architects, sculptors, and photographers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries from many parts of our world. In the final chapter of Arts and Culture we bring together a broad spectrum of styles, voices, and perspectives, which, although focusing on contemporary multicultural America, reflects trends and influences from around the globe. We highlight a number of current issues in the arts including how technology has globalized the arts. The numerous and varied contributions of artists and writers include works by Native American painters such as Lisa Fifield and Jaime Quick-to-See Smith, Latina/Latino writers such as Sandra Cisneros and Oscar Hijuelos, and Australian Aborigine artists.

Throughout the book as a whole, we have tried to present the arts and cultures of the world to suggest their richness, variety, and humanity. NEW IN THE SECOND EDITION

In this Second Edition of Arts and Culture, we have preserved the book's key features but have made important adjustments and necessary corrections of fact and perspective throughout. We have also expanded and contracted various discussions to create a better balance among the arts and humanities and to improve the historical contexts. In doing so, we have added many new photographs to accompany new discussions, in addition to replacing numerous photographs from the previous edition with images that better reflect the original artwork.

EXPANDED COVERAGE OF HUMANITIES FROM AROUND THE GLOBE

We have responded to requests to expand coverage of humanities from around the globe. Chapter 7 is now devoted exclusively to Islamic civilization, and Byzantine civilization is now included in chapter 6 along with Judaism and Christianity. Chapter 8 on Indian Civilization and chapter 9 on Early Chinese and Japanese Civilizations have been revised and expanded with extensive new material. Chapter 10 has been augmented with new material on early African civilization, along with its coverage of the early Americas. In the second half of the book, we have revised our coverage of China and Japan, expanding that material into two new chapters, chapter 19 on Chinese civilization and chapter 20 on Japanese civilization. Chapter 22 on Modern Africa and Latin America has also been revised and expanded with new material.

NEW CULTURAL IMPACT

In addition to retaining the popular boxed features from the first edition, we have added a new feature at the end of each chapter. This explains the influence of one culture or civilization on later ones, showing how the essential, broad strands explored in the chapter continue to impact today's world.

Finest humanities textbook I've seen

We used this textbook for a humanities survey course at my high school. My teacher said it was the finest he'd seen out of dozens, and after using it for his class, I have to agree. The art, maps, pictures, and everything help bring the past to life, and the text, while easy to read, says everything it needs to.

Love the a la Carte Edition

This is the first time I've used an "a la Carte" edition text book. Since the pages lay flat, it's easy to make them stay open while I read and scan. Carrying around only those chapters I need to study from, has been a great convenience. This is a well-organized text book and is easy to follow.

Very good and thorough

The study guide here gives a very good re-cap of the textbook to the point where I found the textbook completely useless for our class purposes (it also helped that the teacher was pretty good at explaining the concepts). It gives you a good amount of problems to practice with, sufficient to do well on the exam, and the solutions are explained pretty well.
