Deisgned fo a particular task, not for the masses..

As a graduate of MMI, I know the book well. It was designed to supplement the lecture given in the first 6 weeks of school. It was written at a very basic level, since many MMI students have no prior experience (that's why they're in school), and students would be overwhelmed by too much technical information in the first 6 weeks of what is 13 months of training. The book is not useful as an informational tool for a non-student, and is priced high due to limited distribution (check the price of an average college textbook- same reason.) The book is the right tool for it's intended application (the MMI beginning student), but the wrong tool for anything else.

I recently purchased this book to get a thorough understanding of motorcycle mechanics and repair/troubleshooting. Far from it! The title itself "The Complete Guide to Motorcycle Mechanics" should read "The Incomplete Guide .. .". This book is very top level and lacks technical content in every respect. The topics are brief and contain hardly any meaniful substance. You'll be asking yourself "where's the beef". Plus, all of the photo's are in black & white and alot are of poor quality. In my opinion I would not be surprised if this book was written by a bunch of high school students doing a last minute class project hoping to squeak by with a "D" - like "D" for Done. The retail price (no fault of Amazon) is way over-priced. You're better off looking at other books or stick to your favorite motorcycle magazine that covers "how to's". You'll learn more with them in a few pages than you will reading this book. Bottom line, pass up this book and buy something else through Amazon. After all they are the best!

With a misleading title like that (and a price like that), this book is bound to disapoint the reader. The most shocking feature of this awful book is the quality of the pictures. There are far better books out there covering the same subject at half the price and 10 times the quality.

this book helped me in the class and has a lot of examples and step by step. it also comes with a cheat sheet in the back of the book that way you dont have to keep looking through the chapters for the formula which was a great help and time saver

This is a very easy to understand textbook. I used it for a course I had previously taken at a different school and found it much easier than my previous textbook. Strangely, the chapters use almost the exact same answers for most of their problems. I suppose it's for simplicity, but it would have been nice to see a better variety. I feel like Chapters 8 and 10 could have been explained a little better though. Some of the answers to the extra problems, shown in the last few pages of the book, are incorrect. I'm not sure if this is a flaw for some books, or if it's a flaw for every book in the 10th edition. My professor verified the answers were incorrect. Otherwise, a good book! I wish I had bought this book instead of renting it, because it's just that helpful.

I have been out of school for over 20 years and could not remember how to do many of the problems, but this book has helped me a great deal. If you are taking some type of math class for the health field, this book is for you.

This text does a rather poor job of introducing the student to system dynamics. I think Dorny does a disservice to the students by treating everything in the frequency domain. Unclear and poor layout.

About the Author
Braden R. Allenby is currently Lincoln Professor of Engineering and Ethics, and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and of Law, at Arizona State University, having moved from his previous position as the Environment, Health and Safety Vice President for AT&T in 2004. He is also a Batten Fellow in Residence at the University of Virginias Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts, Manufactures & Commerce. Dr. Allenby received his BA from Yale University in 1972, his J. D. from the University of Virginia Law School in 1978, his Masters in Economics from the University of Virginia in 1979, his Masters in Environmental Sciences from Rutgers University in the Spring of 1989, and his Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from Rutgers in 1992.

Pricy, but worth it.

I was fortunate enough to study with Dr. Allenby and read this book in the process. Aside from supplying several relevant and intriguing perspectives on the social, economic, and environmental impact of technology, it is a fairly easy read.

If you have any interest in engineering, or are interested in sustainability (including what exactly the word means), this is an excellent book.

"Digital Signal Processing" by Oppenheim and Schafer was, until the publication of their revised book "Discrete-time Signal Processing", the best DSP reference book.
While I would not recommend this book for self-study, I would recommend it as a reference text for someone who has done or is doing a DSP course.
Be advised --- the new version, "Discrete-time Signal Processing", is more up-to-date.

The father and mother of all DSP books

This book "DSP" from Oppenheim & Schafer (O&S) is to digital signal processing what Kernighan & Ritchie "The C Programming Language" is to programming: an indispensable classic.

I learned DSP back in 1982 with a bunch of photocopies of this book. Today I own two O&S copies: one hardcover (at home) and one paperback at work. I don't remember finding a mistake, or even a typo, in the book, which nevertheless never went beyond the first edition (the 3 sequels "Discrete-Time Signal Processing" from the same authors are already geared to "textbooks"...). Back in 1975 there were book reviewers (or cautious authors...) that made their best to eliminate the mistakes that plague many modern books.

One of my DSP teachers said that one senior guy had told him how to learn DSP by himself: read O&S, chapter by chapter, and do 10 random selected problems from each chapter. So he did and he has since then published several important papers on DSP... Recently I had to review, seriously, random discrete signal processing and power spectrum estimation: the most readable pieces on these matters which I found were, precisely, O&S chapters 8 and 11.

In the last years I'm teaching DSP at one University. I've already got a dozen DSP books, ancient and modern, but O&S is still the reference I recur the most. If you could cross "DSP" from O&S with Lyon's "Understanding Digital Signal Processing (2nd Edition)", you would get the perfect DSP book: on the one hand, Lyons' is too verbose and avoids somewhat mathematics (by choice), but provides perhaps the best explanations on DSP you can find; on the other hand, O&S provide rigorous equations and both deep and broad coverage of DSP foundations.

If you want really to understand DSP, have a decent Math training (average Calculus, Complex Variables, Fourier Analysis skills), the book from Oppenheim and Schafer is in the top of the list I would give you to learn DSP.

About the Author

Bill Sones co-authored the popular column "The Numbers Game" with probabilities guru John McGervey for six years. His writing has appeared in Discover, Good Housekeeping, Family Circle, and other magazines, and has been distributed by The New York Times and Los Angeles Times syndicates.

 

Rich Sones holds a Ph.D. in physics from Case Western Reserve University. His writing has appeared in both the popular press and professional journals.

Preface

On a workroom wall in a Cleveland home is a four-by-six-foot map of the world with some 60 colored pins stuck in, clustered in the United States and Canada but scattered over nations of six continents—Zambia, South Africa, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Grenada, Trinidad.... These markers represent subscribing newspapers, magazines, and Web sites to our weekly Q-&-A column "Strange But True," begun in 1996 as an outgrowth of weekly beer-and-bull sessions with friends at a local pub. Our Thursday night table was reserved for "the philosophers." One evening, someone in the gang said, "You guys ought to write some of this stuff up," and "Strange But True" was born.

We had no idea it would blossom worldwide, win an invitation from The Los Angeles Times Syndicate to come on board, get picked up by Boys' Life magazine (kids' version), and keep email flowing from the four corners at all hours of the day and night.

It's an Internet-driven phenomenon, we've remarked many times. All the columns are sent out via email, as are questions to researchers. We garnered subscribers through painstaking spamming of long lists of newspapers and magazines. New ideas for items are often no farther away than the next site-surfing wave or emailed questions from readers.

So, whaddaya want to know? Could a voodoo curse kill you? (Possibly.) Do dogs watch TV? (Two woofs = "Yes.") Does a guillotined head feel itself hit the ground? (At least sometimes—the experiment's been done!) Do blind people see in their dreams? (If they once had sight, then yes.) Can a penny thrown from the top of the Empire State Building bore through a human skull? (No—so don't bother trying.) On a hot desert, could you drink your urine to survive? (Bottoms up!) Are there people who never pass wind? (They may think so, but...)

We have always believed that a big part of life is the Amazement/Amusement Quotient. Our credo for the column has been that everything be documented or at least defensible as a speculation by scientific sources. So, if you're looking for suggestions that ETs are listening in on your phone conversations or dead friends are coming back for a visit, watch TV. But if you want to know about real phenomena from the real world, we invite you to read on.

The opportunity for a book came to us in a most serendipitous manner. Always on the lookout for offbeat sources for "Strange But True," we emailed Pi Press with our promotional pitch explaining our column, and we requested courtesy copies of books by biomechanics expert R. McNeill Alexander and Harvard dreams psychologist J. Allan Hobson. The email response said the books were on their way. End of story, or so we thought. Just days later, we got a call from Pi Press associate editor Jeff Galas. Based on his reading of the promo and his net surfing of SBT columns archived on various Web sites, Jeff felt that we had the makings for a popular book.

Honored and delighted, we wanted to move forward. We decided that all book Q&A's would be drawn from previously written columns. That understood, we agreed on the topic categories—four in all, covering Love, The Body, Animals, and Death—and agreed on the inclusion of illustrations for about a quarter of the items, the publication date of November 2005, and the title, Can a Guy Get Pregnant: Scientific Answers to Everyday and Not-So-Everyday Questions.

We had eight years of material to choose from; we had our own favorites and we also had feedback from editors, readers, and researchers. The artist's drawings shaped up fast, engaging and whimsical—just the right touch. And Jeff has proved to be as gracious and competent an editor to work with as any writers could wish for.

The book and column have been both challenging and enormously rewarding. We've fielded a delightful galaxy of questions, and we are forever indebted to readers like the one who wondered if he would have been a different person had his parents waited just five more minutes before having the sex that conceived him.

A special sort of gratitude goes out to the many, many researchers at colleges and universities all around the world, who have so generously proofed and revised our answers, helping to keep things accurate. In many cases, they took bare questions—in subject areas as diverse as anthropology, cosmology, linguistics, sports science, and zoology—and wrote wonderfully detailed answers for us. Their love for their subject came shining through, and much of the best of this book we owe to them.

Nothing has been more gratifying than to have these dedicated educators express their own gratitude to us for "helping to get valid information out to the public, countering popular mythology." One of our favorite comments came from a Harvard psychologist whom we had contacted several times over the years, "To me, you guys are gods of the weird and wonderful. Keep it up." Thank you, Dr. C.

Viagra for the mind

What a great collection of interesting information! There's a lot more to this book than just a provocative title and funny illustrations. The questions are imaginative and the answers witty -- and documented.

Read this book and you'll have late night cravings for a sequel!

Really a fun book!

This is a really fun book! It answers some questions I've always wanted to ask (but who could I ask?) and a lot more that I never would have thought of asking. I have a particular interest in animals, and this book devotes a whole section to them. (Do dogs really age seven years for each human year?) The book is attractively designed, with many drawings interspersed. I have a busy life, so I'm constantly picking books up and putting them down. This is easy to pick up, read various questions, and save more for tomorrow! It's the kind of book anyone would enjoy.

Brain treats

If from time to time, you yearn for chocolate, you can understand the delights of this book. The book is a splendid mixture of science and fact mixed with humor and insights. One of the best ways to spice up life is to keep asking questions...the more weird the question, the more interesting the answers. The authors of this book are truly advocates of the "weird and wonderful", and I do hope they keep on asking so that I keep on learning. A real "thumbs-up " book that is fun to read!
