About the Author
Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences fro Nova University. Bob is most energized by teaching mathematics and has taught a variety of mathematics courses at Miami-Dade College for nearly 30 years. He has received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College, and was among the first group of recipients at Miami-Dade College for an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. Bob has written Intermediate Algebra for College Students, Introductory Algebra for College Students, Essentials of Intermediate Algebra for College Students, Introductory and Intermediate Algebra for College Students, Essentials of Introductory and Intermediate Algebra for College Students, Algebra for College Students, Thinking Mathematically, College Algebra, Algebra and Trigonometry, and Precalculus, all published by Prentice Hall.

Preface

Today's college algebra and trigonometry students are a diverse group. Some are going on into calculus or other math sequences, whereas others will complete their math requirements with this course. This text is designed and written to help both sets of students succeed. The book has three fundamental goals: First, to help students acquire a solid foundation in algebra and trigonometry, preparing them for other college courses such as calculus, business calculus, finite mathematics, and computer science; second, to show students how algebra and trigonometry can model and solve authentic real-world problems; and third, to enable students to develop problem-solving skills, fostering critical thinking within a varied and interesting setting.

A source of frustration for me and my colleagues is that very few students read their textbook. When I ask students why they do not take full advantage of the text, their responses generally fall into two categories:

"I cannot follow the explanations."
"The applications are not interesting."

I thought about both of these objections in writing every page of this book.

"I can't follow the explanations." For many of my students, textbook explanations are too compressed. The chapters in Algebra & Trigonometry have been written to make them extremely accessible. Every section contains a range of simple, intermediate, and challenging examples. Voice balloons allow for specific annotations in examples, further clarifying procedures and concepts.

"The applications are not interesting." One of the things I enjoy most about teaching in a large urban community college is the diversity of who my students are and what interests them. Real-world data that celebrate this variety are used to bring relevance to examples, discussions, and applications. I selected all updated real-world data to be interesting and intriguing to students. By connecting algebra and trigonometry to the whole spectrum of their interests, it is my intent to show students that their world is profoundly mathematical and, indeed, pi is in the sky.

Awesome Book!

I ordered this book in September of 2012 for my integrated math class. I was struggling within a few weeks because my teacher simply didn't teach. She would provide a few examples and leave you wondering how you got to that answer. I bought my book and voila! My grade went back up to an A. I have never had a textbook for teaches you and explains things as well as this one does. The hints in the book are awesome and you can always use them. I've since then taken a pre-cal class and bought his book for that too, once again AWESOME. Most textbooks leave you wondering how they got to the solution while Rob Blitzer will actually teach you. You can be left feeling confident that you actually know what you're doing. There is also a test at the end of each chapter along with a CD that comes with him showing you how to do the problems. I bought my copy used, but it was like new. This guy writes the best textbooks in the world. I love his books so much that I in fact will save them for my own future children to use. If you even need a supplemental textbook, get this. You literally cannot get anything better.

Great textbook. I bought this to study it further while I was off of school for the summer, and the quality of it is amazing. I was expecting it to be a little bit beaten up from over the years, but the book looked nearly brand new! Definitely recommend.

About the Author

Seth P. Bender, Esq., is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, and attended law school at the Fordham University School of Law in New York City. He began his career in the Capital Markets practice at the law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP. Since that time, he has consulted at some of the largest New York buy- and sell-side institutions negotiating new trading documentation and renegotiating preexisting agreements to account for the changes in today’s volatile markets. His experience at investment managers and dealers has provided him with a diverse forum to examine the varying issues applicable to each of these constituents during market swings, and has provided him with a greater understanding of both sides of a trading relationship, the terms generally accepted in the marketplace by dealers, and the inefficiencies created in the negotiation process--knowledge that he believes can streamline the negotiation phase of the ISDA Master Agreement for many industry participants.

Focused and Concise

I found this book to be very helpful in that it was concise and easy for someone without a legal background to understand. Not sure what the previous reviewer had expected, but the book's intent is clearly not to be a long-winded analysis of the CSA. In my opinion, the 36 pages of material more than enough covers the CSA - a document that's typically 14 pages. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who's looking to gain a better understanding of ISDA Master Agreements without having to sift through an enormous amount of information.

Very informative and invaluable guide!

I've found that the playbook lives up to its billing. It is exactly what the title suggests it is, a playbook. The playbook gives the reader exactly what s/he is seeking, if in fact, the reader is seeking an introduction to the structure ISDA Master Agreement, and a helpful guide through the intricacies of the most highly negotiated points of the ISDA Master Agreement.

The author does a superb job in streamlining the material, and laying out the fundamentals of the ISDA Master Agreement, defining concepts, and the terms found therein, and defining the respective role of each party plays in trades transacted under an ISDA Master Agreement. Plus, he gives the reader a rationale behind each negotiating tip and drafting recommendation which he provides.

The author literally, provides the reader with "real-world" sample language in which an ISDA Negotiator can use to "reduce the frequency and scope of events that permits a dealer to terminate transactions under an ISDA Master Agreement", which is the Negotiator's chief goal when negotiating an ISDA Master Agreement.

I recommend the playbook for both new and experienced ISDA Negotiators, as the playbook provides invaluable and timely negotiating tips and drafting recommendations in light of the financial crisis of 2007-2008, and the recently enacted Dodd-Frank Legislation. The newly minted negotiator should start by enrolling in the author's course at the NYIF, which gives you a look at negotiating ISDA Master Agreements from a 10,000 feet and above perspective, and supplementing his/her training by filling in the gaps by purchasing and reading the playbook.

this book was good. it was needed for one of my classes. i ordered the book and it came in as expected and on time. my friends were worried for me saying i shouldn't order books online. i couldn't figure out why and all they would say is, "you never know what you're gonna get." well, i know what i got...i got a book. after opening the package, i ripped the bubble wrap (i didn't know books could break). i opened the book and imagine my surprise...words!!! looks like the joke is on my friends cuz i got what i ordered and i got it fast. thank you amazon. by the way, i need knew friends.

About the Author
Michele R. Davidson, PhD, CNM, CFN, RN, is Associate Professor of Nursing and affiliate faculty member, Women's Studies Program, George Mason University. Her 21 years of experience include labor and delivery, postpartum, NICU, reproductive endocrinology, and inpatient gynecology at Columbia Hospital for Women. She has delivered over 1,000 babies during her career as a nurse midwife and formulated a postpartum depression support group, which provides ongoing treatment to indigent women. Her doctoral dissertation, "Care of High-Risk Women Cared for by Certified Nurse Midwives", brought attention to the potential care that midwives could provide to a high-risk obstetrical population. Dr. Davidson has published over 50 papers, authored more than 17 textbook chapters, and published an additional 15 textbooks that she has co-written, including the international bestseller "Old's Maternal-Newborn Nursing and Women's Health Care Across the Lifespan" (9th ed.), translated into nine languages. She was Past Vice President of the Washington, D.C. chapter of the American College of Nurse Midwives and was an item writer for the ACNM National Certification Examination. She received an honorary award from the March of Dimes for her ongoing care to pregnant women.

London has been able to combine her two greatest passions by being both a nurse caring for children and families and a teacher for almost 35 years. She received her B.S.N. and school nurse certificate from Plattsburgh State University in Plattsburgh, New York. After graduation, she began her nursing career as a pediatric nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City then moved to Pittsburgh, where she began her teaching career. Mrs. London accepted a faculty position at Pittsburgh's Children's Hospital Affiliate Program and received her M.S.N. in pediatrics as a clinical nurse specialist from the University of Pittsburgh. Mrs. London began teaching at Beth-El School of Nursing and Health Science in 1974 after opening the first intensive care nursery at Memorial Hospital of Colorado Springs. She has served in many administrative and faculty positions at Beth-El, including coordinator for nursing care of children for 32 years. Mrs. London maintains her clinical skills working in an urgent care and after-hours clinic and doing undergraduate pediatric clinical supervision. She obtained her postmaster's neonatal nurse practitioner certificate in 1983 and subsequently developed the neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) program and the master's NNP program at Beth-El. She is active nationally in neonatal nursing and was involved in the development of the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Educational Program Guidelines. She has contributed 5 chapters to various neonatal nursing texts. Mrs. London is active in nurse practitioner education in general. She was involved in the revision of the Core Competency for NursePractitioners and Curriculum Guidelines for Nurse Practitioner Education, as a member of the Education Committee of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties and participated as part of the Core Competency Validation Expert Panel. Mrs. London has also pursued her interest in college student learning by taking doctoral classes in higher education administration and adult learning at the University of Denver in Colorado. She feels fortunate to be involved in the education of her future colleagues. Her teaching philosophy is that, with support, students can achieve more than they may initially believe they are capable of achieving. Mrs. London and her husband have two sons and one dog (Reilly, daughter by proxy). Her two sons, Craig and Matthew, are involved in computer informatics, and media arts and animation and are more than willing to give Mom helpful hints. Patricia A. Wieland Ladewig Patricia A. Wieland Ladewig received her B.S. from the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, Minnesota. After graduation, she worked as a pediatric nurse before joining the U.S. Air Force. After completing her tour of duty, Dr. Ladewig relocated at Florida, where she accepted a faculty position at Florida State University. There she embraced teaching as her calling. Over the years, she taught at several schools of nursing while earning her M.S.N. in maternal-newborn nursing from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and her Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University of Denver in Colorado. In addition, she became a women's health nurse practitioner and maintained a part-time clinical practice. In 1988 Dr. Ladewig became the first director of the nursingprogram at Regis College in Denver and., in 1991, when the college became Regis University, she became dean of the Rueckert-Hartman School for Health Professions. Under her guidance, the Department of Nursing has added a graduate program and the School has added three departments: the Department of Physical Therapy, the Department of Health Services Administration and Management, and the Department of Health Care Ethics. Dr. Ladewig feels that teaching others to be excellent, caring nurses gives her the best of all worlds because it keeps her in touch with the profession she loves and enables her to help shape the future of the nursing profession. When not at work or writing textbooks, Pat and her husband, Tim, enjoy skiing, baseball games, and traveling. However their greatest pleasure comes from their family: son Ryan, his wife, Amanda, and grandson Reed; and son, Erik, his wife Kedri, and granddaughter Emma.

Very nice and easy to read text, BUT with the Kindle version you don't have page numbers and there is no search capability so when your assigned certain pages to read or tables to review, you have to already know the chapter then scroll through to find what you're looking for.

I'm a nursing student and this is the required reading. It's a pretty straight forward text with good info.
If you are looking for the mecca of all resources, there isn't one, but this is a good start. If you have an active interest in OB/GYN, this text will give you a solid platform.

This book was required for one of my nursing classes. So far, it seems to be pretty comprehensive and easy to read. Some of the material is repeated, but repetition also helps with retention; therefore, this may be a positive or negative depending on your personal preferences.
