Most people will call this a beginners book on microprocessors, but this book gives you all the tools you need to be able to design and use a microprocessor based computer. I used this book in a beginning micrcomp design class, now it is one of the most important reference books in my library. This is a definite must have for anyone who wants to know all they can about computers and how they work.

Still Relevant 20 Years Later

This book remains relevant thanks to the continued ubiquity of the x86 platform. This textbook provides a good introduction to the platform, along with excellent descriptions of interfacing hardware that seem to be de-emphasized in today's textbooks. The book tells an interesting story, almost walking through the reader through the research process for, say, different memory types, complete with vendor reference sheets. Some of the hardware is no longer available but the information remains relevant and applicable. Excellent book! I'm buying the third edition also for my library.

Is a required textbook for my managing diversity class

This isn't a bad book. It was required for a managing diversity class I am taking in graduate school. The content is short readings on various topics generally centering around cultural diversity and discimination. There are group exercises in between some of the readings. The book is very much centered around being used in a group-discussion oriented classroom. I don't think it is worth what is being charged for it, but as far as textbooks go, it is pretty inexpensive.

About the Author
ANITA FINKELMAN, MSN, RN, is founder and president of Resources for Excellence, a health care consulting firm. She is currently Adjunct Associate Professor/Clinical Nursing at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing. She has served as Director of Continuing Education and Associate Professor/Clinical Nursing at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing. Her 30 years of experience in psychiatric nursing includes clinical, educational, and administrative roles in a variety of health care settings. In her administrative positions, she has had experience with managed care and has developed and taught a course on managed care. Ms. Finkelman has authored many books and lectured frequently on administration, managed care, continuing education, and psychiatric nursing, both nationally and internationally, and has also been active in many professional organizations such as the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau. She also serves on the Editorial Advisory Committee and Editorial Board for "Home Care Provider." worst required text I've had

I had to get this book for a leadership course in nursing school. The topic is interesting, but this book is the worst for explaining the content. Too wordy, seems to try to write as much as possible about something that can be explained in much less. Most of my classmates agree. "Contemporary Nursing" by Cherry is much more interesting and reader friendly then this snoozer. Contemporary Nursing: Issues, Trends, & Management

I would give it no stars but Amazon won't let me

This is the worst academic text book I have ever read. Not only is it disorganized but there are frequent grammatical errors. The disorganization makes it hard to read. For instance in the chapter regarding quality of care she waits until the end of the chapter to define quality. The chapter on diversity is mostly dedicated to corporate culture. A little disorganization I can understand, there is a lot to cover. What makes this book so awful is the editing. I don't think any body actually read this book before publishing. If they had the would of noticed that in several spots paragraphs are repeated, not just similar but actually word for word the same thing that was just written one page ago. Also there are several inappropriate uses of words. For instance "Although they should collaborate nurses and doctors often practice in silos." Last time I checked I don't work in a circular attachment to a barn that stores grain. I thought perhaps there is another definition of silo. No there isn't, in every dictionary I could find (Merriam, Webster, dictionary.com ect.) none of them defined it as anything other than a place to store grain. If you have to read this book for school I feel sorry for you. Lastly before you dismiss this review as somebody retaliating for getting a bad grade, despite this book I got an A in the class.

I am almost certain the first comment on this book is from somebody from the publisher or the author herself.

EDIT: Before any body else comments, I know what a silo is and what they meant by it in this book. I just think a text book is no place for colloquialisms.

About the Author

Don Kauchak

Don has taught and worked in schools and in higher education in nine different states for thirty-five years. He has published in a number of scholarly journals, including the Journal of Educational Research, Journal of Teacher Education, Teaching and Teacher Education, Phi Delta Kappan, and Educational Leadership. In addition to this text, he has co-authored or co-edited six other books on education. He has also been a principal investigator on federal and state grants examining teacher development and evaluation practices, and he presents regularly at the American Educational Research Association. He currently volunteer-tutors first-, second-, and third-graders in a local elementary school. It's a lot of fun and he is learning a lot about both kids and classrooms.

Don strongly believes in the contribution that public schools make to our democracy, and his two children benefited greatly from their experiences in state-supported K–12 schools and public institutions of higher education.

It is a good book that is sorely needed to be read by many teachers. More examples and suplementary case studies at the end of each chapter would be helpful. The book targets primary and secondary teachers. Higher level examples for university students would expand the application of the material.

Paul has worked in higher education for thirty-eight years. He is a consultant for public schools and colleges in his university service area and has provided support to teachers in twelve different states. Paul has also worked with teachers in international schools in twenty-three countries, including Africa, South Asia, the Middle East, Central America, South America, and Europe. He has published several articles in national journals, is the co-author or co-editor of six other books, and presents regularly at national and international

conferences.

Paul is strongly committed to public education. His wife is a middle school teacher in a public school, and his two children are graduates of public schools and state universities.

DON KAUCHAK

Don strongly believes in the contribution that public schools make to our democracy, and his two children benefited greatly from their experiences in state-supported K–12

Engaging and Exemplary Teaching Strategies!

As a experienced middle school teacher (120 12 and 13 year olds per day), I have long understood the need for active teaching strategies in my own classroom; strategies that will engage kids, keep them active, teach content and help them to improve their thinking skills. As a workshop provider and teacher trainer, I have also come to understand the hunger teachers have for such strategies in their classrooms.
Strategies for Teachers: Teaching Content and Thinking Skills by Paul D. Eggen and Donald P. Kauchak is an important resource for those teachers of all levels who wish to expand their repertoire of active teaching strategies, and for those education professors who wish to introduce future teachers to engaging and exemplary teaching strategies that have a strong theoretical and research base.
Moving from a discussion of information processing models of teaching, teacher effectiveness research, and active teaching, Eggen and Kauchak guide their readers through various strategies of teaching: inductive, concept-attainment, inquiry-based, and cooperative learning strategies. While stressing the importance of the constructivist teaching models, Eggen and Kauchak also acknowledge the need for direct instruction models of teaching and have an excellent chapter on the lecture-discussion strategy.

An overpriced, but useful, step-by-step “how-to” guide best suited for those seeking specific teaching prescriptions.

Strategies and Models for Teachers essentially is a detailed guidebook and on the basics of teaching, learning, thinking, and offers many different models of teaching that each have specific advantages in specific educational situations. After the basics are covered in the first part of the book, each chapter therein is dedicated to a specific teaching model and gives exquisite detail on how to implement them, their advantages and disadvantages, and how they relate to the development of critical thinking, cognitive development, and active learning. There are plenty of practical examples to help illustrate the authors’ points, and the study questions at the end of each chapter will help you to formalize your knowledge base and solidify your understanding. This book certainly is teacher-centered and lays out all the educational options, allowing the teacher to choose dependent on what suits him or her best.

I think those who are actively teaching and would like to read about fresh new delivery methods would benefit the most from this text.

Generally I felt this book was written in plain language and very easy to read, but I thought that the repeated use of vignettes was excessive and diverted attention away from the main point that was reached much later.

I used this book as part of a graduate-level course on teaching and agree with other reviewers that it is useful, but I fail to understand why it costs more than $100 (or even $25). I would highly recommend borrowing or renting this book if these options are available to you. With such a high price, you will not get a lot of bang for your buck.

The people who play jazz create the complexities and individual nuances that make a history of jazz so difficult to formulate. No clear-cut category can encompass all jazz. Each performer's idiom is a style unto itself; if it were not so, the music would hardly be jazz.

Jazz, like almost all other music, comprises three artistic activities: creating, performing, and listening. In traditional Western European music, these three activities are not always performed by the same individual, although they quite often are. In jazz, however, it is necessary for the performer to combine all three at the same time. Musical creation is an active part of any jazz performance and depends on the performers' understanding of the developing creation, an understanding gained only by their ability to listen well. They must react instantaneously to what they hear from their fellow performers, and their own contribution must be consistent with the unfolding themes and moods. Every act of musical creation in jazz is, therefore, as individual as the performer creating it.

Jazz occupies a unique place in American cultural history. Although it has been influenced by the music of many countries, it remains a purely American phenomenon. And because the creators of jazz, the performers, have been influenced by social and historical forces peculiar to America, an understanding of their life experiences and lifestyles is often essential.

It is almost impossible to present a history of jazz without looking closely at its great performers. Although we are concerned mainly with the music itself, the various styles can often be seen to have grown directly out of the substance of the performers' lives, and we have therefore given whatever biographical information is necessary to understand a musician's development.

Looking over the historical span of jazz, we cannot say one performer is more important than another, and we have had a difficult time choosing which performers to discuss. We have selected certain individuals for special biographical treatment because they stand out as leaders in the development of a particular jazz style. We have necessarily had to exclude a number of significant artists. Furthermore, we have gone into detail in the biographies of some musicians, not because they are more important than others, but because their lives have been bound up with the lives of so many other musicians. Such an approach allows us to examine many interesting interactions between musicians who have determined the direction of jazz over the years. Nevertheless, the subject of this book is jazz, not life histories, and we include biographical detail only to the extent that it illuminates the music.

This edition updates several of the ongoing stylistic trends in jazz today, including the strong historical influence of Latin music to modern big bands and salsa bands, bebop, and crossover. The new hybrids of American music have been added to the end of the text. New biographical sketches for recent and historical musicians have been added for balance and to provide background for the discussions of style. The overview appendix on rock has been expanded for a better understanding of its influence on contemporary jazz styles. SPECIAL FEATURES

The book's format is best suited to students and professors concerned with the chronology of jazz styles and how they have influenced one another. The chapters are organized so that professors may include additional biographies and recordings. It is also possible to schedule short-term classes by using only the first chapters of each part for class discussion.

Listening Guides and Recordings. Discussions of each stylistic period appear at the beginning of each chapter, and most of them are accompanied by a Listening Guide of a specific performance. For the sake of convenience, most of the recordings come from the Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz (SCCJ). This excellent collection is readily available to students. Furthermore, it contains extensive explanatory notes by historian Martin Williams that add much to its effectiveness. Every recording featured in a Listening Guide is labeled so it can be located in the collection. For this edition, several Listening Guides for selections from SCCJ have been added, where appropriate, at the end of each part of the text. The Listening Guides are intentionally kept brief and point out musical landmarks. They have proven successful in the classroom because they leave professors free to help students draw their own aesthetic conclusions from the music. The guides have been designed primarily to help students at any level discipline their listening. A suggested discography appears at the end of each chapter to further augment the students' listening experience.

This edition again stresses the importance of listening by adding several new Listening Guides. There is a total of 70 Listening Guides. By using the Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz (five CDs) and the supplementary two tapes or CDs that accompany this text, there will be very little need to secure albums to facilitate examples for the Listening Guides.

Box Biographies. Within the flow of the discussion, short biographical boxes appear that relate to the topic but not directly to the specific subject. In this way, background information can be presented without interruption.

Student Study Aids. Several other study aids are included to help prepare the student for the course: "The Elements of Music for the Nonmusician" and "The Elements of Jazz." The first is intended to supply the necessary rudiments of music to students who have little or no music background. The second presents specific musical elements in jazz and illustrates them with several examples; it also defines many of the jazz terms used throughout the book.

Student Tapes/CDs. The recordings that accompany the text serve two purposes. First, the instructor can make listening assignments knowing that the recorded examples are immediately accessible—that is, in the Smithsonian collection and the student collection. The second purpose is to supply more contemporary examples for the students to have after the course is finished.

Glossary. Glossary terms are printed in bold type at least once in the text for easy identification and are readily found again in the extensive glossary at the back of the book.

Teacher's Manual. Brief summaries of each chapter, topics for classroom discussion, and a bank of questions from which to construct exams are provided in a teacher's manual and will help the professor better use the material in the text. For this edition, additional listening guides are available in the teacher's manual.

Online Activities. Interactive listening software is now available to access the Listening Guides on the two-CD series that accompanies the text. This software allows the student to move anywhere in the listening example with just a mouse click on the description. There is additional background material on both the performer and the music and an interactive glossary. As a student of jazz styles, you must keep one activity foremost in your studies: You must actively listen to the examples and observe the differences that identify each style. Reading and discussion alone will not convey the essence of the various styles. Only listening does, and listening requires total attention; approach jazz as you would any other serious musical art. Great book, but a bit dry.

There is a good reason this book is used as a text in several jazz and music history classes. This book is THE place to go if you want a definitive look at the roots of jazz music and how it has evolved. The only problems with it are that it is a bit on the dry side (hence it being used as a textbook) and that it claims it is supposed to come with a companion CD, yet did not come with one when I ordered it. If you are wanting to learn about jazz music, this book is necessary!
