Most people will call this a beginners book on microprocessors, but this book gives you all the tools you need to be able to design and use a microprocessor based computer. I used this book in a beginning micrcomp design class, now it is one of the most important reference books in my library. This is a definite must have for anyone who wants to know all they can about computers and how they work.

Still Relevant 20 Years Later

This book remains relevant thanks to the continued ubiquity of the x86 platform. This textbook provides a good introduction to the platform, along with excellent descriptions of interfacing hardware that seem to be de-emphasized in today's textbooks. The book tells an interesting story, almost walking through the reader through the research process for, say, different memory types, complete with vendor reference sheets. Some of the hardware is no longer available but the information remains relevant and applicable. Excellent book! I'm buying the third edition also for my library.
