Kerry Rice is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Technology at Boise State University, one of the leading K-12 online teacher preparation programs in the country. A practical resource for all teachers

I would highly recommend this book to all teachers who are working with students in online or blended learning programs, whether they are new to virtual education or have been working in the field for a few years. The chapter on serving special education students using virtual methods will be especially helpful to many educators, who may mistakenly assume that online learning cannot be a good fit for students with disabilities. This volume really proves that the only way to have a high quality online learning program is to employ highly qualified online teachers; no matter how good the technology or software is that a district uses, it will never replace talented, specially trained, highly qualified teachers. All teachers need ongoing professional development, but this is especially true in virtual and blended learning because the technology evolves so quickly. ~ Laura Segala, Instructional Consultant, Connections Learning

Kindle edition will not display on a Kindle

I bought this book last summer, good book, good info. What befuddles me is how Pearson did this e-book. They simply made digital scans of the print. Consequently, you cannot view this on a regular Kindle. I bought this for use on my ipad and Mac, so ok there... but now I just bought a Kindle paperwhite and cannot read the book on it because it is essentially a giant pdf. This actually made even the ipad edition hard to read. I get that there are a lot of tables and such in the text, but the page fidelity makes the digital version hard to read. Moral ofthe story, buy the print version. They do mention this in the fine print, but you don't realize what a pain it is. Good thing I have an iPad and a Kindle.

Overall great textbook, a few critiques

I use this book in a university class I teach to Education undergraduates, and overall, it is excellent.

I have the electronic version, which I read on my computer, and I am glad I got this version, as it allows me to search for terms throughout the book quickly. I don't read it on a Kindle, so i don't have the problems others mentioned; it shows up fine on my screen.

The strengths of this book:
- Tables! Lots of tables! While I thought a few of the tables ended up confusing the issue more than clarifying, most of the time the tables really crystallized the issues being discussed, and were a great study resource for my students.
- Research. Overall, this book is on solid ground, research-wise, and most of the claims made are backed up by evidence. (The education world needs more of this IMHO.)
- Organization. The book is extremely well organized. Topics are divided appropriately and discussed adequately.
-Tone. While being formal in tone, it was also easy to read, which my students really appreciated.

The main weaknesses are:

-Early grades. There is not enough emphasis on teaching to K-5, which is HALF of the range stated in the title. Most activities and such in the book assume that the students involved can fluently read, type, and work independently. Teaching online to the elementary levels requires facilitators on the student end, and more use of videos, synchronous technology, and so on, than would be necessary for the older grades. This is only mentioned in passing in a few places, rather than being an integral part of the online elementary teacher's strategy.
-Teaching method. The book conflates "online learning" with "student-centered learning." It is possible to use other teaching methods online, whether teacher-centered or some happy medium. The author's preference is obviously for student-centered learning, but this approach, ironically, may not be appropriate for all students (or topics). For one of the assignments in my class, I have my students develop an online lesson based on Gagné's Nine Events of Teaching, which is a teacher-centered approach, and it works well. (I also have them develop lessons using student-centered approaches.) There are many approaches and methods possible in online education.
-Learning styles. There's a big controversy about this, I realize, but I'm with Daniel Willingham on this one. There's no scientific evidence for "learning styles." This doesn't mean teachers shouldn't differentiate instruction, but let's stop appealing to "learning styles" in education textbooks!

This book is intolerable

Maybe it's just me (I have no marketing background but desperately want to learn for my start-up) but I cannot get hardly anything out of this text. I have tried very hard to tread through the writing and learn something useful but chapter after chapter seems to be the exact same thing... overly wordy, rambling & unnecessarily academic writing with no comprehensible message behind it, no strategies I can apply to my own business and no organization that I can make sense of. Feels almost like I'm reading a paper a college student BSed their way through with a whole bunch of long words and cryptic sentences in order to sound impressive. What a rip-off. I paid $70 for this and it has been the most useless book I've paid for in my research process (and I've read 16 other books thus far to help me with my venture).

The only reason I'm giving this two stars and not one star is that out of the first six chapters I've read, two of them actually made sense. One was on International Marketing and did a very good job explaining the technology limitations of other countries and the ways foreign citizens adapt to this and use technology. This is actually very helpful information and I'm going to use it. The second was on the legal and ethical aspects of using the internet. It gave an extremely concise explanation with lots of info and it was easily understandable. Unfortunately, I've read a chapter like this over and over and over again in pretty much every e-business book I've picked up so far so it's getting old.

Required to buy this book for Marketing 3721 class and we rarely used it. Even when we did, I felt the text was out dated and not very informational.

About the Author

Dakshi Agrawal, IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, 19 Skyline Drive, Hawthorne, New York 10532 (electronic mail: agrawal@us.ibm.com). Dr. Agrawal is a research staff member at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in the Policy & Networking Department. He has been a core team member in developing the Policy Management Toolkit for IBM Autonomic Computing, and received an IBM Research Division Award and Invention Achievement Award for this contribution in the project. Dr. Agrawal received a Ph.D. in 1999 from the University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Urbana, IL in electrical engineering. He worked as a Visiting Assistant Professor at UIUC during 1999–2000 before joining T. J. Watson Research Center, IBM Corporation, Hawthorne, NY as a Research Staff Member.

Dr. Agrawal has more than 30 publications in international conferences and journals in the area of digital communication theory, distributed computing systems, and digital security and privacy. He has been granted or has applied for more than ten patents with the US Patent Office.

Seraphin Calo, IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, 19 Skyline Drive, Hawthorne, New York 10532 (electronic mail: scalo@us.ibm.com). Dr. Calo is a Research Staff Member at IBM Research and currently manages the Policy Technologies group within that organization. He received the M.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey. He has worked, published, and managed research projects in a number of technical areas, including: queuing theory, data communications networks, multiaccess protocols, expert systems, and complex systems management. He has been very active in international conferences, particularly in the systems management and policy areas. His recent involvements include serving on the Organizing Committee of Policy 2004 (IEEE 5th International Workshop on Policies for Distributed Systems and Networks) and serving as the General Chair of IM 2005 (The Ninth IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management). Dr. Calo has authored more than 50 technical papers and has several United States patents (three issued and four pending). He has received two IBM Research Division awards and two IBM Invention Achievement awards. His current research interests include distributed applications, services management, and policy based computing.

Kang-Won Lee, IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, 19 Skyline Drive, Hawthorne, New York 10532 (electronic mail: kangwon@us.ibm.com). Dr. Kang-Won Lee is a research staff member at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in the Policy & Networking Department. He is currently working on policy-based storage area network planning and verification. Dr. Lee has received his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign, specializing in computer networks. Dr. Lee has published more than 40 technical articles in premier IEEE and ACM journals and conferences.

Jorge Lobo, IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, 19 Skyline Drive, Hawthorne, New York 10532 (electronic mail: jlobo@us.ibm.com). Dr. Lobo joined IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in 2004. Before going to IBM he was principal architect at Teltier Technologies, a start-up company in the wireless telecommunication space acquired by Dynamicsoft and now part of Cisco System. Before Teltier, he was a tenured associate professor of CS at the University of Illinois at Chicago and member of the Network Computing Research Department at Bell Labs. At Teltier he developed a policy server for the availability management of Presence Servers. The servers were successfully tested inside two GSM networks in Europe. He also designed and co-developed PDL, one of the first generic policy languages for network management. A policy server based on PDL was deployed for the management and monitoring of Lucent first generation of softswitch networks.

Jorge Lobo has more than 50 publications in international journals and conferences in the areas of Networks, Databases, and AI. He is co-author of an MIT book on logic programming and is co-founder and member of the steering committee for the IEEE International Workshop on Policies for Distributed Systems and Networks. He has a Ph.D. in CS from University of Maryland at College Park, and an M.S. and a B.E. from Simon Bolivar University, Venezuela.

Verma manages the Policy & Networking technologies area at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, Hawthorne, New York. A very academic approach to web programming

If you are familiar with the author's book (in its many editions) on programming languages, all I can say is that this is written in a similar style - thorough and very academic. There are code examples demonstrating what is being discussed, and there are summaries in each chapter as well as exercises and review questions, but you might be left wondering "what is the big picture here?". It by no means has the programming manual style of an O'Reilly book that often works through one big project - or several of them - as a way of teaching you internet programming principles. The good thing about this book is that the author has covered each subject very thoroughly. The bad thing is that you will need to read the book in short doses digesting each portion slowly as his style is quite academic and each page is densely packed with information. Since the last edition the author has added three chapters covering Ruby, Rails, and Ajax.

I would say this book is OK if you have a pretty good background in programming in C and C++ and already know something about web programming since there is only one preliminary chapter and it is rather vague. This book has a great overview of many of the important aspects/languages required to make great web pages. I am currently using this book in a computer science class, and it has been very helpful. fast-paced, effective overview of multiple web technologies

If you don't have a clue regarding web markup or scripting languages, as in "none", then don't get this book. You won't be able to follow. However, if you have at least written some basic scripts/markup, get ready to do some work (it will be work), and learn tons from this guy.
It's packed with information; a concise summary of nuts and bolts of multiple technologies that go into making a dynamic website.

It's brevity was part of it's challenge for me, and I think for others as well. One user gave 2 stars for "gaps in explanations" but, I strongly disagree with this poor rating. The Preface reads ".. this book is aimed at college students, not necessarily computer science majors, but anyone who has taken at least two courses in programming ... also useful for professional programmers who wish to learn Web programming ... the goal of this book is to provide the reader with a comprehensive introduction to the programming tools and skills required to build and maintain server sites on the web." I'm keeping it as a reference because the author has done such an exceptional job of covering the rudiments of entire technologies in single chapters.

If you have never even touched Javascript, or PHP, or at least some programming/scripting language, then then this book will be too much work. This book is not an intro to HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, AJAX etc.. It is a densely-packed overview of multiples of them, with the understanding that you already know how to do basic programming/scripting.

Frustrating read

This book makes very good use of color, graphics and graphs, which is more than I can say for many textbooks. The information the textbook relays is good, but that is where my praise for this book ends.

With regard to the graphics, the text refers to them often, but more times than not the graphic is not on the page where the referral is (in a few cases, it's not even in the same chapter), causing the reader to constantly be flipping pages to make sense of what the authors are saying. The layout is also all over the place, and in some cases there's a four-line column sandwiched between a picture caption above and a graphic below, and the reader ends up trying to make sense of a paragraph that is completely disjointed before realizing that poor layout caused them to miss a few critical lines that would make the whole idea make sense.

As for the information, the authors all too often say something to the effect of "we'll talk about this later," leaving the reader knowing that this skipped topic is important but still having no grasp of it or how it plays in. And for all the good and interesting information presented, the book has some serious flow issues, making it an alternately difficult and boring read.

If you are looking at this book listing, you most likely are required to get this book for a class. It is in fact cheaper here than in most stores (and definitely cheaper than the campus bookstore), and even the free Super Saver Shipping will get it to your door in under ten days in most cases.

If, however, you are looking for a good textbook for personal reasons, look elsewhere.

Nothing wrong with it at all. If you are taking a physical geo class and the teacher asks for the 10th edition, just get this one, much cheaper and the same as the 10th.

A useful basic book on IP code with some nice extras

The title of this book is more self-effacing than it needs to be. This is quite a good book on basic image processing programming. The most attractive feature of its code is that the author has created C functions that do not require an elaborate and idiosyncratic interface to use (unlike, say, _Computer Vision and Image Processing: a practical approach using CVIPtools_ by Scott Umbaugh). This code can be easily included in your already-existing IP library code.
The choice of topics is mostly middle-of-the-road. It covers the various point processes (arithmetic, bitwise logical operations, histogram-based transforms, etc), areal operations (convolution kernels and selection kernels), image resizing, 2-image operations, and compression (this last the weakest of the coverage, but still quite acceptable for a general book) in a very clear and competent manner. In this regard, the best surprise is no surprise.
But even in these plain-vanilla topics, Mr. Crane manages to provide some nice touches. For example, his is the only book of its sort that I know of to provide the formulas for generating Gaussian and Laplacian of Gaussian convolution kernels of arbitrary size and roll-offs.
Most satisfyingly, this book includes coverage of some topics that are truly useful but typically not covered in basic IP programming texts. These include various approaches to digital half-toning and some wonderful explorations of image warping and morphing.
All in all, this book is a small treasure. If you program for a living and image processing is part of your domain, the book is well worth having on your shelf. If you program for a hobby and are interested in learning how to work with digital images, this may end up being the only such book you feel the need to buy.

Excellent book

A great book for intro to image processing. Example codes are very well written, with an emphasis on clarity (as opposed to using compact C operators which make it difficult for others to understand).

Errors in the text

Overall the author explains image processing concepts well. I have owned the book for several years and now have a need for it. It is very helpful in determining which components of an image processing suite are needed for an application. The C code appears to be well written. Unfortunately, there are errors in the text and the author's email address does not work as of 7/26/00.
