Literature and the Writing Process (8th Edition), by Elizabeth McMahan, Susan X. Day, Robert W. Funk

Writing process covered in EVERY chapter.  Focus on the writing process throughout the book, not just as an added element but as an integral part of the literary study.  This allows students to improve their writing while enjoying the study of literature.

  • Chapter 4: Researched Writing has been revised and moved to the front of the book.  The chapter now follows the initial chapters on the writing process and provides easy-to-follow instruction for planning, researching, and documenting a paper using secondary sources, including a detailed description of the MLA Style for citing and crediting these sources.  The chapter also contains a new documented student essay and is generously supplemented by Ideas for Researched Writing throughout the book
  • Seven sample student papers, some with drafts, instructor or peer comments and prewriting materials, that illustrate how to write about each genre and how to do researched writing. Students can see and understand how to go about devising and drafting their essays; they profit from seeing the writing process illustrated at every stage.
  • Three kinds of writing prompts included in each chapter allow instructors to choose among them flexibly depending on his or her goals and philosophy.
  • The single text for class saves them money and is convenient.

From the Publisher
This unique text blends a complete writing instruction text, a literature anthology, and a handbook into one, combining instruction in the process of writing with an introduction to literary analysis. Designed to guide students through the allied processes of critical reading and critical writing, its process-oriented approach shows students how to use writing as a way of studying literature, and gives them the tools to analyze literature on their own.

From the Back Cover

I very much like the support for the writing process. This text has the best support of any introduction to literature text that I have seen.  I think it is good to divide the discussion of the writing process among several chapters.  I like the reminders of the process throughout all chapters.

–Denise Nemec, NorthwestArkansas Community College

Literature and the Writing Process, Eighth Edition reinforces the writing process in every chapter and is designed to guide you through the complementary processes of active reading and critical writing.  Literary selections promote active reading and are used to help you read, analyze, and write about literature.  Critical writing coverage, including responsive writing topics, critical writing topics, and researched writing topics, are featured in every chapter.   A Handbook for Correcting Errors rounds out the book and offers important grammatical pointers for writers.

Old Material in a New World
By Clarice
This book goes back to essays written thousands of years ago. It would matter if the content covered new Essayist and new material. Not worth the purchase but was required by an "instructor".

Works for a variety of courses
By Patricia F. Dunn
I teach Composition 111 and 112 at a community college along with a Dual Enrollment English class, which combines Comp I and Comp II for college credit, to high school college-bound seniors. Initially, I used this text for Eng 112, and when it came time to purchase anthologies for my Dual Enrollment Course, I explored every text I could get access to. After exhaustive research, I chose Literature and the Writing Process, 8th ed. because it combines writing--the process, the modes, and research--the list goes on and on--with a solid selection of fiction, drama, and poetry. In short, I can use one text for both parts of the course instead of separate texts for the two required college composition courses. If there is a change I'd like to see in the next edition, it would be the inclusion of multi-cultural, particularly Asian, selections.

Ideal Textbook for Introduction to Literature
By A Customer
I chose to use McMahan's text because it saves me time as an instructor of English. Composition comprises the most significant portion of a student's grade in a college literature class, and this text teaches students how to write an essay about literature from the beginning of the process to the end. I also like the bonus of a novella, The Awakening, which is often taught at the intro. level but under separate cover. Such a deal.
