About the Author
James H. McMillan is professor and chair of foundations of education at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, where he teaches educational research and assessment courses and directs the Research and Evaluation Track of the PhD in education program. He is also director of the Metropolitan Ed­ucational Research Consortium, a partnership of Virginia Commonwealth University and seven Richmond-area school divisions that conducts and disseminates action and applied research. His current research interests include classroom and large-scale assessment. He has recently published the third edition of Classroom Assessment: Principles and Practice for Effective Standards-Based Instruction and edited Formative Classroom Assessment: Theory into Practice. He has authored three educa­tional research methods textbooks and published numerous articles in journals, including the American Educational Research Journal, the Journal of Educational Psychology, Contemporary Educational Psychology, and Educa­tional Measurement: Issues and Practice.

Better Written Than the Fourth Edition

This text was required for a grad school course. I had to buy the 5th edition because I had dropped the course a year ago when the 4th edition was in use. The 5th edition is more comprehensive, more clear, and asks questions useful for classroom teachers and for curriculum specialists. This book should be required reading for every administrator and for every person in Central Office who prescribes curriculum. This book should be the text for a required course in Assessment for everyone involved in the writing of high-stakes tests, including both state-mandated tests and the Educational Testing Service. The more one learns about appropriate assessment, the more horrific the current tests appear. GOOD BOOK!

Older version aligns with new edition very well!

This book in in alignment with my course and syllabus. This book has proven to cover all of the content that is needed within the 6th edition, at a fraction of the price! The content is relevant and fresh even with it being relatively 'out of date'. The book came very quickly, and the packaging was great and the product arrived exactly as described.

So far I am actually enjoying this book with the real life examples scattered about to help give a true perspective on assessment within various classrooms.

I used this as a textbook in one of my graduate program classes but I decided to keep it because of the good assessment information that it gave. It gives a lot of information about many different assessment situations. It also gives a lot of great examples of what that particular type of assessment could look like. Very helpful!
