About the Author

Marilyn Friend has worked in the field of education in a variety of roles for over 30 years. Her particular areas of expertise–the focus of her research, grants, teaching, writing, and work in the field–include inclusive schooling, co-teaching and other collaborative school practices, systems change, urban education, and family—school partnerships.

 

William Bursuck began his career as a general education teacher, and as a special education teacher and university teacher educator he has maintained an active interest in inclusive practices, publishing numerous research articles, successfully obtaining grants to conduct research, and publishing two books. Dr. Bursuck takes particular pleasure in providing classroom and future teachers with practical, evidence-based strategies to improve educational outcomes for students with special needs in this age of teacher accountability. He is a professor in the Department of Specialized Education Services at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Content is great, publishing options are not.

I am giving this book five stars based on the strength of the content itself. The text is well organized, easy to read, and a little better focused than some I've dealt with. I am not going to hold the publisher's failings against the author.
If I were to rate this based on the method by which the content is delivered, I would give this a half star... if I was feeling generous.
I already had the e-book version since it was included in the course materials for the class I took. I am one of those odd ducks, though, that prefers both hard copy and electronic. As I was searching for a hard copy to order, the only thing I found was the loose leaf.
Since there is no bound book for this, make sure you have a one inch notebook on hand, preferably a D-ring, to make it easier on yourself.
The issue I have with this particular text/publisher is that your only option is to buy either the access code for an electronic version by itself (which is only good for six months from the time you activate it), or the loose leaf bundled with the electronic version. The loose leaf is black and white, very thin paper. No color except on the high-gloss cardstock front and back "covers." Be aware that highlighters will definitely bleed through. Also, if your post-its or flags are too sticky, be very careful about removing them in order to avoid tearing the page. I was pretty surprised when I opened the package and saw how flimsy it was!
I have approximately a year to go to finish my credentialing program, including student teaching. At the very least, Pearson needs to offer a loose leaf or spiral bound version by itself, without the e-text. People who are serious about kids and teaching will keep good texts as resources. I'm not trying to just pass a class; I'm trying to help build students and prepare them for college and career opportunities. Not all textbooks are worth keeping, but this one really is a great addition to a professional reference library.

Terrible Terrible quality

I am completely disappointed in this purchase. It's loose leaf. Ok, I get that but for almost $80 a certainly expected a little higher quality. The pages look like they were run off of someone's home copy machine. All pages are black and white and so thin they tear when you turn the pages. When I pay this much for a text book I expect one of two things. To be able to re-sell it or to keep it in my personal library for future review. This piece of junk will be good for neither. I am telling you these pages are so thin that a highlighter tears them. To add insult to injury, I have to spend 5 more bucks on a binder to put these lame pages in. Really disappointing.

Applicable book - used in my teaching credential program for supporting students with diverse needs. I found it to be easy to read with lots of applications and relevant up to date information regarding laws and teacher responsibilities. A great textbook and reference guide for pre-service teachers, as well as teachers in the classroom.

Stephen F. Davis is Emeritus Professor of Psychology at Emporia State University. He served as the 2002-2003 Knapp Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences at the University of San Diego. Currently, he is Distinguished Guest Professor at Morningside College and Visiting Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Texas Wesleyan University. Since 1966, he has published over 325 articles, 30 textbooks, and presented over 900 professional papers; the vast majority of these publications and presentations include student coauthors. He has served as president of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP; Division 2 of the American Psychological Association [APA]), Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology, Southwestern Psychological Association, and Psi Chi. In addition, he received the first Psi Chi Florence L. Denmark Faculty Advisor Award. He is a fellow of APA Divisions 1 (General), 2 (STP), 3 (Experimental), and 6 (Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology), and a recipient in 1988 of the American Psychological Foundation's (APF) Distinguished Teaching of Psychology Award.

Psych info made easy.

This book was a good introducion to the field of psychology. It was a great help to me during my general psychology course. Aside from presenting its information in a clear and easly understandable way, the text is well organized and full of study aids. The chapters are helpfully subdivided and each segment provides a synopsis and a "study break" self quiz so you can test yourself and see how much of the material you have asimilated. Margin definitions and summeries of all the important terms and concepts are presented adjacent to the full explanations of the material. The graphs and illustrations in each chapter are very informative and useful in explaining the concepts and experiments presented. Overall this is a good book for anyone who wants a genral overview of psychology.

A unique form

This psychology textbook isn't like a lot of others in that it's not written in a textbook manner. The author sometimes writes in first person as he shares his own experiences and opinions about certain topics; in the end, it's written very much like a novel...it hooks the reader, which is more than I can say for a lot of other psychology textbooks.

My professor didn't really give much guidance as to what to study for and pretty much everything was up for grabs. I mainly used the study test questions and study test fill in the blanks which were super super helpful. There are some typos in the book though so sometimes you can confused.

This small book very clearly presents the ideas of major classical theorists, and makes their ideas relevant by showing how their ideas helped to inspire a variety of contemporary studies. The range of studies included is very broad, and the combination of theory and studies makes sociology a very attractive and interesting subject.

Visual Basic 2010

I had to get this book for a class and it is an ok text book. I like that it comes with a copy of the visual basic software editor so that you can load it at home and don't have to go to a school lab everytime you need to work on homework. The only real negative I have with the book is that if you know NOTHING about any programming language (me) it is a little hard to use I have to do a little extra reading from other texts to keep up.

Visual Bacis 2010 Schneider- A Sad Disappointment

This book is vastly overpriced. The material is not organized nor indexed well. A given subject is dragged through a number of sections instead of giving a thorough explanation and moving on. I am a math instructor. I found the book both boring and unpleasant to use. It might be great for an instructor who only wants to roll out the Pearson prepared materials but his students will be unable to really produce much without outside resources.The student exercises seemed to be wasteful of space. The projects were rather fussy and contrived.I will say I did not spot too many bad errors of fact.

For a beginner I would recommend a Sams 24 Hour, A For Dummies or similar book. It will save you $70to $90.
Amazon's price saved me at least $20 on this text over the campus bookstore.

What a train wreck

If you have no knowledge of VB and are not a programmer...then you might wanna read another book. I had to buy Murach's Visual Basic 2012 to understand this book. And the video that is provided with this book(from the school website) the guy sounds like he has a nasal drip problem....or something. And as is about as exciting to watch the video as is reading the book....considering the subject matter.

Book arrived on time and brand new...Kudos Amazon!

About the Author
Sue-mei Wu, Ph.D., Lecturer of Chinese in the Modern Languages Department at Carnegie Mellon University, is currently undergoing the promotion process to associate teaching professor. She is the project leader and primary author for the "Chinese Link" textbook project. She has a Ph.D in linguistics, with a minor in language pedagogy and solid experience teaching Chinese at all levels. After receiving her Ph.D in linguistics from The Ohio State University in 1997, where she served as a graduate teaching associate for over four years, she taught Chinese at Harvard University from 1997-2000. She has been the coordinator for Elementary Chinese at CMU since she joined the CMU faculty in Fall 2000. She has received CMU Faculty Development Fund (2000, 2002) and Falk Grant (2001, 2003) awards to support developing online language and culture modules and incorporating them into Chinese courses at CMU. She is currently the co-author of a new textbook being developed at CMU for heritage learners, and co-author and chief editor of a new Classical Chinese textbook, written in cooperation with scholars from other institutions. Yueming Yu, PhD., is an Associate Teaching Professor and Coordinator of the Chinese Program of the Department of Modern Languages at CMU and co-author of this project. She came to CMU in 1992 to start the Chinese Program at the Department of Modern Languages and has been the Coordinator of the program ever since. She has 35 years of experience in teaching a foreign language. She was an Associate Professor of English as well as the coordinator of the International Journalism Program at the Shanghai International Studies University before she came to the US. She was also one ofthe founding members of the English newspaper ("Students Weekly") in Shanghai and a pioneer for the English News Program of Radio Shanghai. She has translated several books from English to Chinese, and compiled English-Chinese dictionaries. Her doctoral dissertation was a research on the criteria used in the selection of textbooks for teaching Chinese in the United States. Her current research focuses on pedagogical issues in Chinese language education with an emphasis on the relationship between teaching the language and teaching the culture, including a special focus on the teaching of heritage students. She is also the project leader of another textbook of Chinese for heritage students. Yanhui Zhang, Instructor of Chinese in the Modern Languages Department at Carnegie Mellon University, is a co-author and an editor for the project. She is currently an adjunct faculty member at CMU, teaching Elementary Chinese I and II. She is also a graduate student of MCALL (Masters of Computer Assisted Language Learning) and has recently started her Ph.D program in second language acquisition at CMU. She has taught various levels of English as well as English for business management in China. She is currently working on a project for the computer-assisted learning of Chinese language and culture.
