About the Author

Michael F. Graves is Professor of Literacy Education, Emeritus at the University of Minnesota and a member of the IRA Reading Hall of Fame. Mike taught in the upper grades, and his research and writing focus on such matters as vocabulary, comprehension, and higher-order thinking. His current major research efforts are with IES-funded research and development projects on teaching a basic vocabulary and on teaching word-learning strategies.

 

Connie Juel is Professor of Education at Stanford University and a member of the IRA Reading Hall of Fame. Connie taught in the primary grades, and her research and writing focus on such matters as phonemic awareness, phonics, and word study. Her current research centers on the effects of early elementary school instruction and specific interventions on literacy and language growth.

 

Bonnie B. Graves is a full-time education writer and the author of 15 books for children. Bonnie taught in third and fourth grades, and her major interests are making literature enticing and accessible to beginning and middle-grades learners. In addition to writing, Bonnie currently spends time working with children, teachers, and other educators on children’s writing.

 

Peter Dewitz is an educational consultant and researcher. He has worked with districts across the country to improve reading achievement and brings this real world experience to Teaching Reading in the 21st Century. He has been a professor at the University of Virginia and the University of Toledo where he taught courses on reading comprehension and reading disorders. He writes and researches about comprehension instruction and most recently on the process of evaluating, selecting and using core reading programs.

Chapters/Pages in wrong order

I noticed this the second time I had to use my textbook for class. The chapters 9,10, 11, are all out of order. The pages just from 230 to 327 and then back to 358 to 263. So I'm missing pages 230-263...they just aren't in the book. Wish I could return it but I didn't even notice it until I had to quote page numbers for an essay so the time limit ran out. I strongly suggest a book that has all of its pages, since that's what you're paying so much for.

Doesn't contain case studies!

I bought this book for a Management class. For our 2nd homework assignment, I couldn't find the content in the book that I needed. It turns out this book doesn't contain the case studies, which is a big chunk of the content! Looking back at the Amazon ad, I don't see this mentioned anywhere, nor does the cover of the book seem to look any different. I got to class and wondered why my book looked much smaller than everyone else's even though the cover looked the same. I'm pretty disappointed that this version of the book is missing a bunch of content but I still paid over $100 for a used paperback copy. Aside from this, the book seems fine.

If your instructor uses the case studies within the hardcover book make them aware the the paperback does not contain any of the case studies .

Good content but painful to read.

Let me start by saying that I graduated with a 4.0 GPA, so I'm not a lazy student by most standards. I used this book on my Strategic Management class and, although the content is good, it is very boring to read. I found myself procrastinating every time I needed to read this book (not something I usually do). My advice: read it once to highlight the important parts and read it one more time skipping the repetitive parts (about 65% of the book).

For the editor: the "Starbucks in India" case at the end of the books keeps talking about an unknown monetary unit. It doesn't mention if they refer to US dollars or Indian rupees. I assume they are rupees but the lack of (or overly broad) references and citations make it impossible to find out.

The objective of this book is to guide construction engineers and construction managers in planning, estimating, and directing construction operations in a manner that will attain the best possible results. Based on the author's many years of experience in construction, engineering, and education, it is believed that the material presented is comprehensive enough to serve as the basic text for a variety of construction courses as well as for self-study. For an introductory course, upper-division college-level students should be able to cover much of the material in one semester. For more in-depth coverage, the material should be split between two or more courses. Topics may, of course, be omitted or augmented as appropriate to the nature of the course and the desires of the instructor. In solving the computer problems contained in the end-of-chapter exercises, students should be encouraged to use electronic spreadsheets and their associated functions in addition to conventional computer programming languages. It is strongly recommended that the study of this text in an academic environment be supplemented by visits to construction projects and/or audiovisual material.

The author is convinced that all architecture and civil engineering students should be required to complete a basic course in construction as part of their professional studies. Because construction is the product of all design, no design can be a good one unless it can be readily and safely constructed. An appreciation of construction procedures will not only produce a better designer, but it will also be invaluable to the many graduates of such programs who end up directly involved in the construction industry.

In response to industry developments and user comments, this sixth edition incorporates new and revised material to reflect current developments in the construction industry. New and expanded topics include construction use of the Internet (including the web addresses of major online resources), pull scrapers, rental equipment and the rental equipment industry, fire-retardant-treated wood and wood preservation, Superpave asphalt pavement, rapid repair of concrete pavements, hot- and cold-weather masonry construction, the cryogenic treatment of high-wear equipment components, and precautions in safely craning wood trusses, in addition to updated text, illustrations, and references.

It would not be possible to produce a book of this type without the assistance of many individuals and organizations. The assistance of construction industry associations and construction equipment manufacturers in providing information and photographs and in permitting reproduction of certain elements of their material is gratefully acknowledged. Don't waste your money on this.

If I could post "0" stars, I would. By far, one of the wost textbooks I've ever come across! Horrendous math computations that are incorrect. Hardly states in example problems, where values are derived, or how. Everything is assumed, yet, for a student, how are they to assume, if they theoretically never been introduced to these concepts implied by the tables of values. Numerous times, there values just sitting around, and only after a few page flipping and countless calculations, you discover that the author derived a value via interpolation. Even then, values that are interpolated, are not explicitly explained as to why they are utilized. I can't believe the publishers and review committee allowed this edition to be printed. Example, chpt. 7 pg.115. It reads "100-.39.."It should be "1-.39.."...the authors just appear to come off as lazy folks who can care less about educating next generation of engineers properly. Quite frankly, I'm concerned how a person to hold a professional license with so many mistakes like this? I'm assuming the interns probably check all his work for major projects. Aside from that, much of the concepts are not adequately explained. Professors at universities should seriously just avoid using this book. You learn more from googling the concepts, and reviewing slides of a professor who actually KNOWS what he's talking about and teaching.

If you are an excavation or foundation SUB this may be quite helpful, particularly for road building. I found much of the info on ability and capacities of equipment:loaders, cranes, scrapers; concrete and aggregate production, paving, interesting but not info I need as a CM PM to build buildings in cities. If you want to know how to plan the construction of tall buildings, foundation planning, scheduling, staging, etc. don't look to this book. "Construction Mgmt.", which touched lightly on my interest, starts on page 479 of a 550 page book. This book is simply inaccurately titled.

BOOK ARRIVED IN REASONABLE TIME, IT LOOKED FINE. IT HAS A 1997 COPYRIGHT. HARDBACK. i FOUND THE EXPLANATION OF DISCRETE FOURIER TRANSFORM AND FFT UNDERSTANDABLE. I AM PRESENTLY READING FINITE IMPULSE RESPONSE FIR FILTER CHAPTER. IT IS ALSO UNDERSTANDABLE. MATH SO FAR DISCUSSES EULER'S FORMULA, COSINES AND IMAGINARY SINES ,MULTIPLICATION AND ADDITIONS. SUMMATION OF A LOT OF TERMS, DISCRETE CONVOLUTION AND WINDOWING TO COME UP WITH FIR FILTERS.

Wonderful Book for the DSP Beginner

Rick's book sails the high sea of DSP books and stands out as a classic, in my opinion. Rick's excellent down-to-earth teaching style is mirrored in this book with his written explanation of DSP theory. A problem many authors have is that of skimming over detailed explanations using "clearly", "it can be shown", or "It is left to the reader as an exercise" instead thus leaving the student frustrated. Not Rick. Rick takes the time to guide the reader through numerical exercises in great detail leaving the reader with a sense of accomplishment. A particularly interesting topic that is covered in this book lacking in detail in others is that of band limiting (over sampling) DSP theory with good diagrams. I personally used Rick's book to come up to speed in DSP adaptive disk drive read channel VLSI IC testing techniques with great results. The typical DSP topics are covered (sampling, DFT, filters) without graduate level math. Rick covers single side-band modulation; a topic I found handy in HAM radio. But wait! There's more! The second edition of this book improves upon the first. Finally, note that the book does require that you understand calculus (integration, summation, and other typical higher level math skills) but at the level of a college senior. If you have the fortunate opportunity to attend one of Rick's classes, or meet Rick at a conference, tell him Dave sent you. Rick's book is an asset to any serious DSP student's library.

Very good book...enlightens without dumbing down!!!

I'm a grad student in EE, and have had half-a-dozen DSP classes over the years. Many questions have remained unanswered over this time and I'm happy to say that this book filled in the missing pieces. Judging from the topics Lyons chooses to elucidate, it is obvious that he has traveled this confusing road himself, emerging victorious on the other side of the tunnel. He graciously shares his hard-won information with the reader, shedding light on various ubiquitious DSP confusion causing topics (i.e. convolution, digital filter design methods, DFT/FFT, etc.) If you're a EE that needs to really acquire an intuitive feel for DSP, this book is the answer. He doesn't dumb down the subject, either. Although one can certainly delve deeper (many references are provided), Lyons does a good job of explaining and describing the math. He has a wonderful colloquial style that makes it seem like you're discussing this stuff with a buddy. I can't recommend this book high enough. It's worth several times the purchase price.

A very useful book!

This is an excellent book to read if you want to learn about wastewater treatment or just if you want to refresh your knowledge of this theme. The book presents easy to follow examples in many of the topics, say, clarifiers design (primary, intermediate, final), Aeration basins, etc. I prefer this book rather than Viessman & Hammer because it is much more friendly. I have not check yet the part of the book corresponding to water treatment, but the wastewater part is very good.

This book was used at Portland Community College for an Environmental Engineering sequence (2 Quaters).

Even though this book has introductory concepts of Chemistry, Biology, College Algebra and Fluid Mechanics I would highly recommend a term of "Freshman" 100 Level Chemistry, Biology and related topics in Physics.

The authors intend that the instructor (coursework) will follow the chapters in numerical order. If you have an instructor that skips around a lot it makes this book very unfriendly. It also helps greatly if the instructor provides field trips and lab work directly related to the chapter topics.

The authors covers the chapter topics very completely, however it is a very Dry Read. The example problems often leave out unit conversions. The publisher does not provide a student solutions manual, therefore making it very difficult to find errors made on chapter problems. Many of the images and pictures could be a lot better.

The authors do not present the under laying theory well because they expect the reader to be moderately versed in the math and science aspects.

The authors do a good job explaining the physical processes of water and wastewater treatment.

I feel that I gained a lot of knowledge from this book and there are not any other choices that provide the overview of processes and theory all in one book.

This is NOT a book you want to buy new. Buy It Used. If you are studying this topic for yourself buy an Older Edition.
