SW's Macroeconomics is the best macro book on the market!

After reading this book no one will ever complain that macroeconomics lacks micro foundations. This book first explains the microeconomics of intertemporal goods and labor markets and goes on to create an intertemporal general equilibrium economy (with two periods for simple exposition). Then Wiliamson shows how growth theory and business cycle theories are applied in this general equilibrium economy. This is by far the most fun and understandible way to teach undergraduates about growth and business cycles at the intermediate level.
Williamson also lays out "stylized facts" of the business cycle, including comovements, and he critiques different business cycle theories based on whether they can replicate those comovements in the data. This book comes closer than any other intermediate text to replicating how modern macroeconomics is done.
Ch 8 which explains Solow and endogenous growth models is by far the most understandible and educational of any text on the market, since Williamson does the models in discrete time rather than continuous time. If you're a professor that wants to teach undergraduates growth theory and/or growth dynamics SO THAT THEY REALLY UNDERSTAND THEM DEEPLY and ENJOY THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE, this is the book to assign.

Lack Necessary Details

Rather than using the precise math language to explain the economy, the author created an awful lot of BS throughout each single chapter of the book. I spent more than 3 hours on average reading just one chapter of the text, and when I finally finished and looked back, I found myself not able to recall the core stuffs, because they are totally buried under all those stupid BS's. But you know what, it's fine to have written more than necessary, because that may actually make the book more reliable when the readers are facing some hardcore detail oriented econ exams. However, that is not the case, for example, in chapter 13, there is a full explanation of the sticky price model, and right after the model there is this sentence "...money is not neutral in the short run because of sticky prices (or wages),...." And the author doesn't go on and do a similar experiment for the effects of sticky wages. Believe me, after reading all those tedious craps before the model, you will think that sticky prices and wages are the same thing when you finally reach this sentence. So it seems to me that this book is lack of necessary details for some important concepts, in which case it's not as reliable as I thought it would be. So given it's time consuming BS's , I'm giving a one.

Decent Overview of Intermediate Macroeconomics

This book provides a decent overview of intermediate macroeconomics and is overall quite clear and concise. The intuition for the theory covered is conveyed well, and the author gives a fairly balanced treatment of the various theories. More quantitative examples in the text would have been helpful. One criticism is that there are quite a number of typos in the text, questions at the end of the chapter, and exercises.

About the Author

John P. King has made contributions as an engineer, program manager, and laboratory head during a long career in product development and commercialization. His responsibilities have ranged from upstream R&D projects through commercialization and product launch. At Westinghouse, Xerox, Kodak, and Heidelberg Druckmaschinen, John worked as an engineer and manager in developing a wide range of products, including turbo machinery, office products, and medical imaging systems.

 

As a consultant, mentor, and trainer, John has helped clients worldwide improve both business processes and products. He has worked with project teams for both large and small companies and has written and delivered training programs to clients, followed by project mentoring to ensure the successful completion of their objectives.

 

John is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society for Quality, the American Statistical Association, and the Society of Reliability Engineers. He holds a BME from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, an MS in Engineering Mechanics from the University of Pennsylvania, and an MBA from Northeastern University.

 

Bill S. Jewett is a consultant to businesses engaged in the development of new technologies and multidisciplined products. With insights into important paradigms and advancements in practices, he assists improvement teams in upgrading their engineering and management processes, project management strategies, cross-functional teamwork, and governance of their development projects.

 

For many years Bill worked for Eastman Kodak Company and Heidelberg Druckmaschinen with much of his focus on the development of high-volume electrophotographic copiers and printers. Product Development Improvement

This book by John King and Bill Jewett is a comprehensive guide to the development of reliable products. For development engineers who are not reliability specialists this book provides all that is needed. For those who specialize in the improvement of reliability this book is a good introduction to the more specialized texts. As befits the authors many years of industrial experience this book is very strong on implementation. Other books go deeper into various theoretical aspects of the subject, but in reality implementation, or the lack thereof, is the major problem. This book will help the dedicated practitioner to overcome this hurdle to achieve the implementation of improved reliability. This book is very broad, covering Pugh Concept Convergence, QFD, and Robust Design, along with many other supporting topics, all in an industrial framework. All practitioners who want to develop reliable products should read this book.

Watered-down, too basic

This book is fairly new on the scene. If you want a basic understanding of topics, it is fine, but the book is too facile. The problems are weak and not challenging. This book would be good for a "Finance for Poets"-type of class, or perhaps a junior-college or "adult education" course, but stay away from this book if you want the topics presented in a more detailed way, or if you want more challenging problems to work. A more rigourous text is Ross, Westerfield and Jordan, "Fundamentals of Corporate Finance" (same title, but a much better book then Berk, et al.).

It does deliver the core concepts

I used this book as in a finance course. It does cover basic concepts that would allow you to branch off into specific courses. I gave it a three star review primarily because it wasn't compatible with the testing standards. It's primarily a text based approach with basic coverage on the mathematic aspects of finance.

I ended up using additional resources to suppliment the math approach. The formulas looked familiar from math courses. it took some digging around to realize that it's primarily advanced algebra, the topic of series and sequence but in an applied approach. It's a good book if you just want exposure into aspects of finance, but don't think it'll make you an expert.

The pro's consist of the authors identifying theory, the development of various methods, and giving a lot of concise examples for the concepts using real firms. For the most part, you can view the formulas as math for non math majors. There were some problems where there was no way around dealing with the more complex formulas. If the online content and testing had been consistent with the text teaching style, I would have given this book a better rating.

To maximize your learning experience, I recomend reviewing macroeconomics, I took this concurrently with macroeconomics. The econ course explain the economics aspect a lot clearer and simpler than this text book. I also reviewed old material for advanced algebra to help with using the formulas, series and sequence dealt with compound interest and beyond. Also there should be an understanding that statistical analysis helps derives some of the projected figures used in the capital budgeting section.

PREFACE The human species may be the most widespread species in the world today. Humans have been moving tremendous distances ever since Homo erectus moved out of Africa. To highlight this fact, this uniqueness of humans, we have prepared a new box feature for this edition which we call "Migrants and Immigrants." Almost half the chapters now contain a box about some aspect of the movement of people, ranging from prehistory to recent times. Examples are research on when hominids first migrated out of Africa, possible routes humans may have taken in their migration to the Americas, the spread of foods in recent times, arranging marriages in the diaspora, and the problem of refugees. We have decided to reintroduce a separate chapter on theoretical approaches in cultural anthropology, which reviewers suggested. The separate chapter on "Explanation and Evidence" now has new material on ethics in fieldwork and an expanded discussion of cross-cultural research. Ethical issues are also given more attention in various other chapters. In updating the book, we try to go beyond descriptions, as always. We are interested not only in what humans are and were like; we are also interested in why they got to be that way, in all their variety. When there are alternative explanations, we try to communicate the necessity to evaluate them logically as well as on the basis of the available evidence. Throughout the book, we try to communicate that no idea, including ideas put forward in textbooks, should be accepted even tentatively without supporting tests that could have gone the other way.

I bought it for my dad since he needed it for his ESL class (finally decided to go back to school) aaaaand it came with a code. He has told me that is has everything he needs, he just has to look things up on Google translator when he does not understands something due to not having a broad vocabulary. About the Author
Walter Savitch is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of California–San Diego. He received his PhD in mathematics from the University of California–Berkeley in 1969. Since that time he has been on the faculty of the University of California–San Diego (UCSD). He served as director of the UCSD Interdisciplinary PhD program in cognitive science for over ten years. He has served as a visiting researcher at the computer science departments of the University of Washington in Seattle and at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and has been a visiting scholar at the Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica in Amsterdam.

Contributing author, Kenrick Mock, is an Associate Professor at the University of Alaska–Anchorage. He has also taught at Washington State University, Portland State University, and the University of California–Davis. He teaches undergraduate computer science courses across the curriculum including introductory C++, Java™, Visual Basic® for non-programmers, algorithms, computer security, and artificial intelligence. With the Coastal Marine Institute at UAA, he helped develop a computer system to aid in research about Alaska sea ice and the atmosphere. Before becoming a teacher, Mock was a research scientist and software engineer at Intel™. He received a PhD in computer science from UC Davis.

This is how I learned to program in C++

Among the many wonderful things about this book, in addition to it being easy to understand, is that it doesn't confine your learning of C++ to one particular compiler or platform. All the concepts and examples in this book should run fine on any decent C++ compiler. I used Visual C++ myself, but several others in my class used Code Warrior or Mac compilers.
Yes, this was my textbook for a beginners programming course and I definitely kept it on my shelf instead of selling it on textbook buyback day at the college bookstore!
Do youself a favor if you want to learn C++ and buy this book. It's easy enough to follow that I'm CERTAIN I didn't need to be enrolled in a college course to understand it. It will give you the foundation you will need for UNIX or Windows programming as you become more experienced.
And besides all that, it is fun to read and not horribly dull and dry!

One of the best C++ Textbooks I've bought

I have a stack of at least a dozen textbooks on C++ or C#, from O'Reilly's C++ Core Language, Keogh & Gray's C++ Programmer's Notebook, the Osbourne McGrawHill C++ Complete Reference, several niche books catering to C++ coding specific to gaming, several Deitel & Deitel C++ Programming books (which are generally very good), to starters like SAMS Teach Yourself C++ and probably an old copy of C++ for Dummies. I've also got a full version of Visual Studio 2005 & 2008 (available in express editions for free from [...] and several Borland IDE releases, along with seven or eight books purporting to explain everything there is to know about each IDE.

I recently bought Walter Savichs' Problem Solving with C++, 7th Ed. It's unusual in my experience to find myself reading textbooks as though they are the next sci-fi/fantasy hit but this book really caught my attention. I love the straight forward, common sense manner in which the author writes, and the fact that he doesn't preach from the pulpit of the ultimate know-it-all. In this book, the essentials of the C++ language are laid out in a manner that I believe anyone familiar with most any scripting language or another high-level language can pick up quite rapidly.

The author does the very difficult task of reaching out in a way that ensures the majority of readers understand regardless of their level of familiarity. I'm not sure how he does it but each page leaves you understanding--and wanting more. There are a number of code examples that have practical application and the author has done a very good job of making them understandable. More importantly however, he presents the C++ coding samples in a way that allow you to easily imagine the use of the same or similar code to solve different problems than were shown in the text. I believe it should be used in most every college programming class. It is certainly a worthy addition to any programmer's library.

Lastly, the book comes with Borland's Turbo C++ IDE and all the source code on cd, as well as online videos and other resources. I rarely comment on the many items I purchase on Amazon, so please realize that it takes a remarkable product to cause me to take my limited time to write a review. I hope anyone purchasing the book finds it as interesting and helpful as I.

Yet another overly wordy, poorly organized book. The average length of a chapter in college textbooks seems to have roughly doubled since I last was in college back in the early 90's. I'm not finding any more real content, just more words. This makes books difficult to use as references, as you have to read 20+ pages to answer just about any question.

Chapter 6 (on character I/O) is a particularly good (or bad) example. It rambles all over the place, touching on topics that don't need to be addressed in this chapter, which makes it difficult for readers to keep track of the key points of the chapter or to look up answers to specific questions. Want to know the difference between ofstream and ostream? It will take some effort to find the answer. The very important eof method for input streams isn't addressed until the 48th page of the chapter!

And does anyone proofread books these days? I would have hoped that by the 8th edition obvious errors would have been found and removed. No, the toupper function does NOT "return the uppercase version of Char_Exp" as the table on page 355 claims, it returns the ASCII value of the uppercase version. It's not clear to me that a discussion of methods for character variables properly belongs in a chapter on I/O anyway. Shouldn't it be in the chapter that introduces character variables? (Just about every chapter includes topics that logically should be in other chapters.)

PREFACE

Tom Garrett's passing on New Year's Eve 1997 has dramatically altered our expectations and experience in writing this new edition. This book was initially Tom's idea and while his illness progressively removed him from the labor of writing subsequent editions, his intelligence and spirit nevertheless continued to animate our work. This edition has been accomplished without his presence and guidance, and for the two of us there is an incompleteness to this text that no amount of our time or effort could satisfy. We dedicate this text to his memory in the happy acknowledgment of his continuing influence.

The fourth edition embodies several improvements over the third, but contains no dramatic structural alterations. Work has been done to clarify and improve the philosophical reflections that provide the context for the discussion of both principles and problems in the field. Further, we have attempted to provide a natural and unified discussion of the problems associated with the still contentious issues surrounding the end of life. To give added perspective we have provided occasional interludes on insights offered from cultural traditions that are not usually understood to be part of the mainstream discussion of American medical ethics. We have also enlarged the discussion of genetics research and, of course, updated information on many issues.

As always, there are many people to thank for their contribution to this text. Several colleagues in the field offered their advice and suggestions regarding the revisions in a symposium organized by the University of Scranton. We thank them and the University for this opportunity. Dr. Baillie would also like to thank the University of Scranton for a sabbatical, during which work was completed for this edition. Further, we have attempted to provide a natural and unified discussion of the problems associated with the still contentious issues surrounding the end of life. To give added perspective we have provided occasional interludes on insights offered from cultural traditions that are not usually understood to be part of the mainstream discussion of American medical ethics. We have also enlarged the discussion of genetics research and, of course, updated information on many issues.

As always, there are many people to thank for their contribution to this text. Several colleagues in the field offered their advice and suggestions regarding the revisions in a symposium organized by the University of Scranton. We thank them and the University for this opportunity. Dr. Baillie would also like to thank the University of Scranton for a sabbatical, during which work was completed for this edition. Eye Opening Topic

Bought this book for an online class and it was very useful and easy to work with. It comprehensively covered such difficult topics as death and dying, maternal-fetal conflict, artificial insemination, transplants and biomedical research. Through working with this book I was better able to understand autonomy and informed consent and beneficence and nonmaleficence and the professional standards of confidentially and professional ethic standards.
