About the Author
Mike Sullivan Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University received a Ph.D. in mathematics from Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike has taught at Chicago State for over 35 years. He has been writing textbooks in mathematics for over 30 years. Mike has authored or co-authored over ten books. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and currently resides in Oaklawn. He has four children: Kathleen, who teaches college mathematics, Mike III, who co-authors many titles as well as teaches college mathematics, Dan, who is a Prentice Hall sales representative, and Colleen, who teaches middle-school mathematics. Nine grandchildren round out the family.

Why I Wrote This Book:

As a professor of mathematics at an urban public university for over 35 years, I understand the varied needs of precalculus students who range from having little mathematical background and a fear of mathematics courses to those who have had a strong mathematical education and are highly motivated. For some of your students, this will be their last course in mathematics, while others may decide to further their mathematical education. I have written this text for both groups. As the author of precalculus, engineering calculus, finite math and business calculus texts, and, as a teacher, I understand what students must know if they are to be focused and successful in upper level mathematics courses. However, as a father of four, I also understand the realities of college life. I have taken great pains to insure that this text contains solid, student-friendly examples and problems, as well as a clear writing style. I encourage you to share with me your experiences teaching from this text.

The eighth edition of this series builds upon a solid foundation by integrating new features and techniques that further enhance student interest and involvement. The elements of the previous edition that have proved successful remain, while many changes, some obvious, others subtle, have been made. A huge benefit of authoring a successful series is the broad-based feedback upon which improvements and additions are ultimately based. Virtually every change to this edition is the result of thoughtful comments and suggestions made from colleagues and students who have used the previous edition. I am sincerely grateful for this feedback and have tried to make changes that improve the flow and usability of this text.

The book came pretty fast. I needed it for my college courses starting in two weeks but I was going back to NC to visit, so had the book sent there and it arrived pretty early and took it back to school with me when I left.

Chapters on Trigonometry

The best part that make this book stand out is the way it presents trigonometry. Take those chapters out, ignore the answer sheet (really, they shouldn't be solutions if the ends are not accompanied by the means), take a class with an excellent teacher, you're set for calculus.

Good Book for Basic Understanding of System Analysis

I used this book for IST 232 at Southern Illinois University (Carbondale) for one of their online classes. We only used a few chapters for this course (there is a LOT of information in this book).

Of the chapters we used, the authors did a very good job of explaining the basics of system analysis and design. Many diagrams/figures were given, showing both correct and incorrect notations.

I would recommend this book, though students generally don't have the approval authority for textbooks in a class.

A Mixed Bag...

The difficult part of systems analysis is that you can really only learn it by doing it... and that pretty much means that a book can only provide theoretical information on this topic. The book concentrates on the SDLC model and discusses other approaches whenever appropriate.

It can be boiled down to this: Structured analysis and design = good.

These are the kinds of structured analyses:
SDLC (Waterfall)
JAD
Prototyping
Agile

The solution: Pick the one that most closely aligns with the goals and duration and scope of the project.

The book does go into some interesting historical information relating to these models, and in general--the depth of detail it goes into in some of the basic analytical processes such as DFDs and related diagramming are excellent for a neophyte coming into the field; but getting them right isn't something this book (or any book) can really teach you. Systems analysis is a professional practice that has its own working knowledge--just like medicine or engineering--and most of it can't be learned from a textbook.

This isn't a horrible book, but I think it would benefit more by taking a single case study and differentiating the processes it discusses as it walks through the whole book. This book also has a very dry delivery.

About the Author

Karen Duffy is a Distinguished Service Professor at the State University of New York, College at Geneseo. She received her Ph.D. in social and personality psychology from Michigan State University and is a family mediator for the New York Unified Court System. Dr. Duffy has authored several other books, including Community Mediation: A Handbook for Practitioners and Researchers and Community Psychology.

Eastwood Atwater was a psychology professor at Montgomery County Community College and lectured at Gwynedd-Mercy College. He also conducted a private practice in psychology. His Ph.D. was from the University of Chicago, where he studied with Carl Rogers. Prior to his death in 1996, he authored books including Adolescence, Fourth Edition, and Human Relations.

Psychology for Living

This book does a very good job of remaining humanistic; in that the authors believe that it is within the ability of all human beings to choose to improve themselves, and makes a lot of room for the variability of human preferences and styles. Each chapter contains a self-assessment questionaire that is fun and enlightening, which will give rise to the reader's perspectives and life experience. In contrast to most Adjustment Textbooks, this one is more applicable to real life than most. It minimized psychological theory, and maximized application to your own life!

Okay, so I didn't read this book yet, but the last comment posted made me all the more likely to adopt it to use in the classroom. Christianity and humanism are not polar opposites. In fact, our own personal choices are the only things we 1) can adjust to improve our lives (psychologically speaking) and 2) can offer up as a symbol of our religious devotion (religiously speaking). As soon as I get my copy of this book, I'll read it and post another review.

Buzzword compliant but misguided

I don't know if this is endemic with psychology in general, but I am finding this book to be incredibly humanistic in its philosophy towards making choices. Its goal is to make the student an independent decision maker who is able to meet his own needs.
This operates under the questionable assumption that everyone knows exactly what is best for them and how best to meet a need. This is equivalent to assuming that because a pilot knows how to fly, that the pilot is the best person to navigate the plane. Nevermind that when landing at an airport, the pilot must rely on the air traffic controller for navigation information. How foolish to assume that a pilot is always the best person to handle navigation! It is equally foolish to make this assumption of people.
Now, I'm Christian so I have an obvious bias. I think this book is ... and I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. If you hold to a faith like mine that establishes that there is a God who has a much clearer perspective on life than you do, don't waste your time on this humanistic brainfart.
