"We" is less informative

The experiment of writing the book was more interesting than the book itself. Here, dozens (hundreds?) of writers collaborated in the writing of the book.

The book was very short and even shorter whether the often irrelevant pictures are ignored. I was surprised at the repetition of stories and summaries in the book.

The collaborative writing means that the style is very bland and has no consistent voice.

I felt this was an introduction to crowd-sourcing with some nice examples. It didn't get much into the mechanics of how to make it work or potential traps. Good light reading, but nothing truly special.

This should get you thinking in the right direction...

Are you getting those "what's this Web 2.0 stuff" questions at work? Does the boss want to know why s/he should be considering how social networking can help the business? Barry Libert and Jon Spector can answer some of those questions in the book We Are Smarter Than Me: How to Unleash the Power of Crowds in Your Business. It's a bit "rah rah" in nature, and it actually failed in its initial goal. But this small volume should be more than enough to get your management thinking in the right direction...

The general idea in We is that no one single person or organization can have all the right answers. It's only as you invite others into the conversation that you will make dramatic leaps in customer involvement and ownership. These invitations often show up these days in web sites using tools such as discussion forums, community volunteer help desks, wikis, etc. The "crowds" know more than you do, and they are often quite willing to be part of your success if you'll let them. Take Amazon.com for example... a huge differentiator is their customer review feature (of which this review will be part of as soon as I'm done). Why do people contribute their time and effort on reviews of items when it only serves to help Amazon sell more? Because people are passionate about what they like and dislike, and they want their voice to be heard. This "wisdom of the crowds" enables others to get a more complete view of a product, and that ability drives traffic and sales. The reviewer feels good, the buyer has a better experience, the manufacturer is happy (provided the review was a good one), and Amazon draws more traffic. This is but one example of many that are covered in the book, and its worth the small investment of time to go through the 150+ pages.

When I said the book failed in its initial goal, that's not necessarily a bad thing. The authors actually wanted this book to write itself using wikis and discussion forums for each chapter. The profits of the sales would then be donated to charities, with the contributors determining the percentage of what went where. The profit thing worked, but there still needed to be the traditional writer, editor, etc. in order to get everything to actually end up on the shelf. But even at that, the input of hundreds of participants does come through in the pages, and it's a prime example of the "we" being smarter than the "me".

I also thought the book was a bit on the "this is all great and wonderful, and you need to do it now!" side. Techies will not find details on how to make this all happen, nor will you get a lot of deep philosophical discussion on the academic value of this approach. The writing is emotional, and is meant to touch the reader at a level that calls for some type of response. If you give this to your management (or if you're management yourself), you should come away understanding what "crowdsourcing" is all about, as well as how it has worked in other companies and organizations. From there, you can take the next steps towards nailing down your own personal action plan...

A solid, in-depth exploration

I am almost completely new to programming and am trying to teach myself. I started with a computer science textbook on Python and then moved on to the 8th edition of this book. Around Chapter 14, I saw they they had come out with the 9th edition, so I purchased it. I am studying for the Java SE7 Associates certification next month, so I started over at the beginning of the book and have read back to where I was in the 8th edition (Chapter 16). There have been many changes and updates. One of the most visible changes is that the review questions are now spread throughout the chapter rather than all together at the end of the chapter. The video notes are now available. While not adding a lot of commentary to what's already in the text, I do find it helpful to watch the videos (which feature the examples being worked out for you). There are also practice tests available online. I've taken the first two of these and find them quite challenging and helpful (especially with a certification exam around the corner for me!). I am reading other texts as well (Head First Java and Java The Complete Reference). Liang's book is hefty and taking me forever to get through, but I'm confident that I'll be very solid by the time I'm done. The author, by the way, is very responsive via email whenever I come across typos in the book. These errata are listed on the book's website, so it's good to check there whenever you move on to a new chapter. I highly recommend the book!

KINDLE Version NOT Worth It

NOTE: This is a review of the KINDLE version. The content of the book is fine; please use other reviews to guide your purchase based on content. My objective is to inform the buyer if they want, or not, the Kindle version.

The caption claiming this book looks exactly like the print version is inaccurate. The reason is that 40% of the book is missing. How? The book comes with a code that enables you to download the other 40%, or "bonus" material. The eBook version does NOT come with that. It is an additional $24 charge. In other words, you don't get the 'whole book' unless you buy the 5 lbs of dead trees.

The Kindle app on the computer is clunky, making reading this an arduous task at best; for example, you'll wear out your mouse scroll wheel trying to scroll down the page. This isn't a PDF and the Kindle software is impotent in comparison to PDF reader software.

The price *SEEMS* good, until you realize that you'll have to pay an additional $24 for the "bonus" chapters, and another $42 for the MyProgramming Lab access. If the price was $80 for the eBook, added to the $24 for the rest of the book plus the $42 for the lab access, the $150 list price is exactly the same. BUT, you *cannot* sell an eBook, but you CAN sell the paper book. Getting just $5 for the paper version makes that a better deal financially, even if it means laying waste to a virtual forest for this massive tome.

In other words, it will COST YOU MORE MONEY for the Kindle version. The only two benefits are the text tools (search, copy/paste) and the lack of needing Conan the Barbarian to tote it around for you.

If You Want To Learn Java...BUY THIS BOOK!

Over the years, I have learned numerous technologies via the self taught, read a book method. There are many good books available. This book is by far the best I have used.

The material is laid out to allow for students with many different agendas. The different approaches and relevant sections are documented at the start of the book. I opted for the cover to cover approach and am glad that I did. This book is clearly written in a way that explains the concepts and techniques to both newcomers and experienced readers. As might be expected, there are numerous code examples in the book. While a few may leave the reader scratching their head asking why, following through always leads to the answer. Additionally, many of the early examples are expanded in subsequent sections, gradually leading to fun and/or useful applications.

The content also goes far beyond the typical introduction to a programming language or environment. In the later sections, data structures, networking, graphics and a number of other areas that make a real difference in the student's ability to be productive are presented.

This book is clearly written with the student in mind. Each chapter has a large end section consisting of highlights, review questions and programming exercises. The exercises are incredibly rich and diverse. The author has clearly spent considerable time putting together these exercises so that students from diverse areas of business, science, etc. will find relevant examples of applying their new found skills to their immediate needs.

The only negative I found, is that there are some places in the book where there are small typo and similar errors. The author encourages the reader to let him know if any are found. I did just that, and to my (pleasant) surprise, got responses every time, and not just a canned auto reply.

I have recommended this book to a number of friends and colleagues. If you are reading this and trying to decide what book to get...this is the one.

Served its purpose, but I will not use it again

I used this book as a textbook for an undergraduate introductory philosophy course with a Critical Thinking component - I was asked to put the course together at the last minute, and was searching for a textbook that was not prohibitively expensive. Unfortunately, the under-handed tactics of modern academic publishers make it so that it is nearly impossible to review the contents of any of these kinds of textbooks before purchasing them. Had I been able to do so, I would not have purchased the book because it displays one major shortcoming, namely, the lack of any discussion on the formation of arguments - inductive and deductive reasoning, syllogisms, premises, soundness/validity, etc. That said, the textbook was useful to some extent, although I think the attempt to present current and "hip" examples drawn from popular culture borders on pandering. It did include some good and accessible discussions of the value of critical thinking, as well as information on how to evaluate certain kinds of propositions and statements with a critical eye. And, the exercises included within did provoke some thoughtful responses from my students. However, due mainly to the aforementioned omission, I will not be using this book again. I would consider it more appropriate for high-school students than for college undergraduates.

Methodical

At the university where I work as a professor of science, I was asked to teach a course called "science in practice". My first question was: Which textbook should I use? I read some books on the philosophy of science but concluded that the ideas are too abstract even for a trained scientist. I wanted a book that teaches the student how to think like a scientist. I also found it difficult to use examples from my research work. To do that I had to teach first year undergraduate students about image processing before I could move on to the actual topic. Luckily, I came across this book!

This book is about critical thinking. How asking a set of well defined questions would reveal to us the worth of an argument in a speech, article or amazon-book-review. The authors make the claim that by learning the meaning behind those questions and asking them we can become critical thinkers. In my experience, their claim is true. Having taught the course for three years, I can say that almost all the students learn something very valuable and in addition enjoy the process of learning. I have myself become better at structuring my arguments when I write scientific papers. Some books have the power of being able to change your thinking- This is one of them.

As a side note, may I say that it isn't right to add a review that affects the ranking of a book when the review is based on feedback to a certain book seller?!
In this book we learn that the conclusion has to be an answer to the issue which we are exploring. The issue when reviewing this book is: Is this a good introduction to critical thinking? My conclusion is yes. Highly recommended.

This book is the strongest introduction to critical thinking I have read so far. And by "strongest" I mean it teaches you critical thinking in a step-by-step process where you will be introduced to each topic of critical thinking one at a time with precision & clarity. And the approach the authors use is unique! Where it's centralized around asking key and important questions that would shed light on the dark spots of arguments.

It begins by explaining the benefits of being a critical thinker (Chapter 1.)
Then, it takes you to how to be a critical thinker and what are the attitudes of a critical thinker, it's more of the common-sense of critical thinkers (Chapter 2.)
After that, you will be introduced to the most basic elements of critical thinking and argument-analysis: The Issue and Conclusion (Chapter 3)
Next, is also another step of analysis which is concerned about the Reasons supporting the argument (Chapter 4)
Now, after having the structure of arguments analyzed you will be spotting influential elements in the argument that would play key roles in persuading you... Such elements are like the use and abuse of ambiguity (Chapter 5) and it's other sisters - the Assumptions and unstated beliefs the arguer hides behind their arguments (Chapter 6)

Reaching chapter 6 means the end of analysis and the start of evaluation of arguments... You will do your first evaluation of soundness and validity of arguments by spotting the tricks and ploys the author induces between the lines, these are called FALLACIES (Chapter 7)
The following 3 steps are concerned with evaluating the truth & validity of the evidence supporting the reasons of argument (Chapter 8 + 9 + 10)

After that the journey of evaluation will start to take an explore-and-conquer approach... hehehe... "Chapter 11" is concerned with the soundness of the provided statistics as evidence!
Where "Chapter 12" is concerned with the important information that have been omitted by the arguer and if it would influence the minds of people and listeners.
"Chapter 13" explores the possibilities of deriving new conclusions and judgments other than the one(s) inferred by the arguer himself.

The journey reaches the end as the authors of the book discuss with you some obstacles to critical thinking and how it's important to avoid them and even conquer them if possible, such obstacles will function as barriers to stop you from developing your skills of being a critical thinker.

8th edition basically same as new 9th edition

I bought this 8th edition for my macroeconomics class instead of the 9th edition that was supplied at the campus bookstore. It basically has the same information in it...the only thing different about it is that the order of things in some of the chapters are in a different order. Some of the pictures and statistics are different as well, but overall, the important material is the same. If you do not want to pay for the expensive 9th edition and do not need the disk that comes with it, I would definitely recommend buying the 8th edition for a way cheaper price.

This book is very detailed and does a good job in, in several areas, trying to put information in 'layman's terms. Some of the answers to the questions are in the back of the book which is helpful if you are completely stumped on a problem. I'm not a big MacroEcon fan and am really glad my class is over; this book, even with layman's terms, went far beyond into details that made my head hurt. (In a good way, I guess)

Tracking information was not available.

A week before my class I emailed the company where I purchased the book from to ask for a ETA. He emailed saying there was no tracking number..
(I placed my order 3 weeks before class.)

I do not know how or why that could of happened, I was just concerned with getting my book. I really felt as though my purchase was not important. After an exchange of emails, I was told I'd get my book with 2-3 days... it ended up coming 1 day before class.

I guess this is not uncommon, however, I do keep the online companies I purchase from, and I will stay clear of that one...

Kindle edition is limited, and it's a bad textbook overall.

The author (or perhaps publisher) have limited the kindle edition licenses to only 2 devices. I like to be able to view e-textbooks on my phone, tablet and laptop so that I can more easily complete readings and assignments on the go, so having to pick 2 of these 3 was aggravating.

As for the more important issues, content and presentation, this textbook leaves much to be desired. It is riddled with typos, which is frustrating, but even more worrisome is the presence of serious bias. The textbook uses point/counter point articles to discuss issues like the benefits/detriments of globalization. Unfortunately, many of these are designed with one point being populated exclusively with 'straw man' arguments. This thread of misrepresenting complex issues arises outside of flawed pseudo-debates as well. Much better alternatives are available.

This book is a very interesting read if you have the time. I'm doing an international business course at university and if you take in to consideration a lot of what they say and apply it it can be a very useful tool. Some of their points are debatable but it's the same with every text book. The point counterpoint sections do a brilliant job of giving both sides of a lot of interesting topics.

PREFACE If there is a college course that is more exciting for students than the introduction to sociology, we don't know what it is. Both of us began our careers as students taking the "intro course," and we both found it to be life-changing. Over the (many) years since then, we have received thousands of e-mail messages from students that, in different ways and using different words, say pretty much the same thing: "Sociology has given me a new way to see the world around me, it has changed the way I think about myself and our society, it has given me knowledge and skills that I can use every day." Why is sociology so exciting? First, understanding how society operates is a source of power, helping us to recognize the opportunities and challenges that frame our lives and to see that society is a human creation that is subject to change. Second, sociology is liberating. It frees us from the belief that we alone are responsible for our life situations and, by showing how society shapes our world, opens the door to new possibilities. Third, sociology is plain fun. Looking at our families, workplaces, campuses, and local communities with a sociological eye, we suddenly recognize patterns and processes that were always there but went unnoticed. To learn to see sociologically is to have the world around you come alive as it never has before. What could be more fun than that? Sociology is also a vast and diverse body of knowledge that stretches back more than 150 years. Seeing Ourselves: Classic, Contemporary, and Cross-Cultural Readings in Sociology captures this rich legacy, presenting it to readers in the words of the men and women who created it. This collection of readings contains the work of the discipline's founders and others who have made lasting contributions. In addition, it contains important research being done by women and men who are standing on the shoulders of the founders. The twenty-three cross-cultural selections offer sociological insights about the striking cultural diversity of the United States and the larger world. Included are well-known works such as "Body Ritual among the Nacirema" by Horace Miner, "India's Sacred Cow" by Marvin Harris, "The Amish: A Small Society" by John Hostetler, J. M. Carrier's "Homosexuality in Cross-Cultural Perspective," and Elaine Leeder's "Domestic Violence: A Cross-Cultural View." Other articles focus on Arab women and social research, learning to be a doctor in Canada, prostitution around the world, the ways in which global inequality benefits rich countries including the United States, the practice of female genital mutilation, how courtship and marriage differ around the world, global population increase, the health of Native American men, the central role played by Japanese mothers in their children's schooling, and differences in the abortion movements that are found in various countries. Cross-cultural selections broaden students' understanding of other cultures and, in the process, sharpen their understanding of our own society. ORGANIZATION OF THE READER This reader parallels the chapter sequence common to textbooks used in introductory sociology. Instructors can easily and effectively use these articles in a host of other courses, just as teachers can assign articles in whatever order they wish. For each of the twenty-three general topics, a cluster of three to five articles is presented, including at least one classic, at least one contemporary, and at least one cross-cultural selection. The expansive coverage of these eighty-three articles ensures that instructors can choose readings well suited to their own classes, and at the lowest cost. The first grouping of articles describes the distinctive sociological perspective, brings to life the promise and pitfalls of sociological research, and demonstrates the discipline's applications to a variety of issues. The selections that follow emphasize key concepts: culture, society, socialization, social interaction, groups and organizations, deviance, and the importance of sexuality to our society. The focus then turns to various dimensions of social inequality, with attention to class, gender, race and ethnicity, and aging. The major social institutions are covered next, including the economy and work; politics, government, and the military; families; religion; education; and health and medicine. The final sets of articles explore dimensions of global transformation—including population growth, urbanization, the natural environment, social movements, and social change. A NOTE ON LANGUAGE One of the advantages of using this reader is allowing students to read the exact words of dozens of notable sociologists. The editors have assembled their selections from the sources in their original form; we have not altered any author's language. At the same time, we want students and instructors to know that some of the older selections—especially the classics—use male pronouns rather than more contemporary gender-neutral terminology, and one article employs the term "Negro." We have not changed the language in any article, wishing not to violate the historical authenticity of any document. That said, we urge faculty and students, with the original articles in hand, to consider the importance of language and how it has changed in their analysis of the author's ideas. TEACHING FEATURES Seeing Ourselves has two features that enhance the learning of students. First, a brief introduction, placed at the beginning of each selection, summarizes the main argument and highlights important issues to keep in mind while reading the article. Second, at the end of each article are three "Critical-Thinking Questions," which develop the significance of the reading, help students evaluate their own learning, and stimulate class discussion. the absolutely perfect text for an intro to soc class

I used this text for an intro to sociology class at a major university. I love that it is different from the run-of-the-mill intro textbook; instead of 20+ chapters of terms, definitions, etc., this book contains whole or excerpted readings, many of which are classic sociological articles (for example, On Being Sane in Insane Places and The McDonaldization of America). With very few exceptions, this book contains the readings I would choose to assign for an intro class if I weren't using a textbook.

Jonathan Berk is the Professor of Finance in the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley and is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He currently teaches the introductory Corporate Finance course for first-year MBA students at Berkeley. Before getting his Ph.D., he worked as an Associate at Goldman Sachs, where his education in finance really began.

 

Professor Berk is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Finance. His research interests in finance include corporate valuation, capital structure, mutual funds, asset pricing, experimental economics, and labor economics. His work has won a number of research awards including the TIAA-CREF Paul A. Samuelson Award, the Smith Breeden Prize, Best Paper of the Year in The Review of Financial Studies, and the FAME Research Prize. His paper, “A Critique of Size Related Anomalies,” was recently selected as one of the two best papers ever published in The Review of Financial Studies. In recognition of his influence on the practice of finance he has received the Bernstein-Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Award, the Graham and Dodd Award of Excellence, and the Roger F. Murray Prize.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Professor Berk is married, with two daughters aged 10 and 14, and is an avid skier and biker.

 

Peter DeMarzo is the Mizuho Financial Group Professor of Finance at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He currently teaches the "turbo” core finance course for Stanford’s first-year MBA students. In addition to his experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Professor DeMarzo has taught at the Haas School of Business and the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, and he was a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution.

 

Professor DeMarzo received the Sloan Teaching Excellence Award at Stanford in 2004 and 2006, and the Earl F. Cheit Outstanding Teaching Award at U.C. Berkeley in 1998. Professor DeMarzo has served as an Associate Editor for The Review of Financial Studies, Financial Management, and the B.E. Journals in Economic Analysis and Policy, as well as a Director of the Western Finance Association. Professor DeMarzo’s research is in the area of corporate finance, asset securitization, and contracting, as well as market structure and regulation. His recent work has examined issues of the optimal design of securities, the regulation of insider trading and broker-dealers, and the influence of information asymmetries on corporate investment. He has received numerous awards including the Western Finance Association Corporate Finance Award and the Barclays Global Investors/Michael Brennan best-paper award from The Review of Financial Studies.

 

Professor DeMarzo was born in Whitestone, New York and is married with three boys. He and his family enjoy hiking, biking, and skiing.

No MyFinancelab?

well I bought this book because it looked the same as the one that was sold in our school's bookstore. However, it turns out that this product does not have MyFinancelab in it. I would like to question whoever wrote the review before me because I trusted his review and bought this product to find out that there is no MyFinancelab

Adequate for the material presented

I ordered this book for an MBA course. The material is presented in a straight-forward manner and the chapters are explained enough, however I don't know if I would recommend this book to anyone looking to teach themselves this subject, as there are surely other textbooks out there that are more dynamic for self-starters. Having a professor teaching in conjunction with this material is a must in my opinion.

*Please Note* Make SURE when ordering this book you realize that this is NOT the COMPLETE edition of this text; hence "The Core" in the title. There are around 300 extra pages in the full text (seen here: http://www.amazon.com/Corporate-Finance-MyFinanceLab-Pearson-Student/dp/0132745097/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328471461&sr=8-1).

If buying for class, make sure to check what chapters are covered in your course; if this text meets your needs, it is a great way to save some money as opposed to buying the full edition.
