Whilst it can be difficult to sometimes find real, practical advice on using object methods in many books, this text is an exception in that it provides in-depth, pragmatic advice on how to build Shlaer-Mellor object information models.
The book is divided into three parts. The first addresses basic modelling concepts, the second describes practices for building useful models, and the third part provides details of some common analysis model patterns.
The first part reinforces the basic concepts of the Shlaer-Mellor objectinformation model, but does so through more detailed, and practical examples than the original Shlaer-Mellor text. This is not surprising as the original text is a basic introductory teaching aid and this is more of a practitioners guide which has the benefit of ten years experience. However, the added detail and the extended treatment is worthwhile. A fine example of extended value of the model can be found in Chapter 1 with the description of the different object categories that can be found on a model. Starr has added a number of new categories to the original five categories defined by Shlaer-Mellor and his description of the spectrum of objects from concrete objects to abstract objects is very well done. The author's writing style is peppered with some light humour which is a nice touch. His description of a 'soft' object as "one that you can't kick" being an example.
The next few chapters continue the description of Shlaer-Mellor fundamentals supported by examples. Relationships are given the in-depth treatment they deserve with chapter topics moving from simple relationships in Chapter 3 to more advanced subtyping in Chapter 7. Each chapter contains a number of answers to frequently asked questions that provide some more useful information. I felt the answers to these questions could have been done in a little more detail and perhaps a greater number of questions would also have been worthwhile.
The second part of the text comprises five chapters that provide more of the "how to" advice around constructing models. Chapter 8 informs us how to recognise, and avoid "model hacking". A phenomena where the modeller starts focusing on modelling and playing with boxes, lines, etc. in the vain hope of being able to accurately capture a concept or set of concepts. The author provides some useful symptoms for model hacking, such as "People nod politely when you explain your model, but you can tell they just don't get it", and "you have no idea whether your model is complete - or ever will be". This hacking should be replaced by taking a step back and focusing on understanding the problem domain. At this point the distinction between analysis and modelling is introduced, and the usefulness of informal sketches is argued for. This is a good chapter that many an inexperienced modeller would be wise to read. It offers some down-to-earth wisdom from someone who has been there.
As a past practitioner of the Shlaer-Mellor method I found myself nodding my head in agreement with the author on his stressing the importance of writing descriptions to support the graphic model. So many times have I felt that the mere existence of object, attribute, and relationship descriptions would increase the comprehensibility of the models for a reviewer and also lead to models of higher quality. The author provides five excellent reasons for writing descriptions in Chapter 9. Each is backed up through lucid explanations of examples from previous projects. However, the use of descriptions to support the graphical models is useful which ever method you are using. So the spirit of this set of chapters applies to all methods.
Once the importance of descriptions has been presented, the author provides some advice on how to write object, attribute and relationship descriptions in Chapters 10, 11 and 12 respectively. Each of these is well written and the experience of the author certainly comes through his pragmatic real-world examples.
The third part of the text describes some common object modelling patterns. These are not design patterns, but analysis patterns. Topics covered include reflexive patterns, network patterns and linear patterns. A whole chapter is devoted to addressing whether zero, one or many is good enough for the multiplicity of relationships. This is worthwhile as this is a frequently asked question. The author provides some convincing reasons why it is, and in doing so provides some insight into the value of models themselves and the codification of application rules and policies. I felt that the real value of this book for me came through parts 2 and 3. The first part was more of a repetition of the Shlaer-Mellor fundamentals as described in their original text, however the use of greater examples and some added concepts did serve to keep me interested. For the novice however, part 1 will be very useful. Parts 2 and 3 however, are full of valuable, practical advice written in a convincing style.
Overall, I like this book. It is written in a style that is easy to read and there are numerous ideas, idioms and techniques that can be applied to Shlaer-Mellor projects. As I also pointed out, many of the useful ideas can actually be employed irrespective of the method being used, thus increasing the books applicability. The one disappointment was that the book only addresses the construction of object information models, and does not address later models in the Shlaer-Mellor method such as state models, object communication models, thread-of-control chart, etc. This certainly does not mean the book is not useful, far from it in fact, but it does mean that we have to wait for the next book to gain from the authors deep experience.

When the late H.H. Arnason wrote the first History of Modern Art, he gently guided his readers through such comforting realms as impressionism and pointillism, eventually to deposit them in the unfamiliar territory of cubism, surrealism, and even--help!--abstract expressionism. Now, with the fourth edition of this groundbreaking book, Marla F. Prather, curator of 20th-century art at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., brings readers all the way into the l990s, a decade with precious few "isms" to serve as signposts. It's a long, long trip, one that should not be undertaken without this 850-page guidebook.

The thoughtful, readable, always illuminating text, which begins 150 years ago with Bouguereau's soupy pictures of cherubim, now ends with a haunting video-sound installation by Bill Viola. Although H.H. Arnason modestly wrote, "It must always be recognized that the words of the interpreter are at best only an approximation of the visual work of art," History of Modern Art has always done a terrific job helping the art-loving and art-curious alike understand what they're seeing. This edition, like its predecessors, is picture-packed, with 500 new illustrations joining the nearly 1,000 that have appeared before. --Peggy Moorman

Needs More & Better Color; Not Really Improved Over 4th Ed.

I borrowed the 1998 4th edition, which got generally excellent reviews here at Amazon and elsewhere, for comparison. Like the previous edition, this fifth edition is big (9"x12"x2") and heavy (9 pounds). The chapters, bibliography, glossary, index, and credits take up 832 pages, about the same as the previous edition. Arnason died in 1986; for this edition, Peter Kalb is given as the "revising author," although the preface states that Michael Bird revised chapters 1-24. I couldn't find either Kalb's or Bird's institutional affiliation listed on the book or the dust jacket, which is odd since the 4th edition had a photo of and a paragraph about revising author Marla F. Prather on its jacket.
The chapter titles are largely unchanged: 1 The Sources (was "Prehistory") of Modern Painting; 2 Realism, Impressionism, and Early Photography; 3 Post-Impressionism; 4 The Origins of Modern Architecture and Design; 5 Art Nouveau and the Beginnings of Expressionism (was just "Art Nouveau"); 6 The Origins of Modern Sculpture; 7 Fauvism; 8 Expressionism in Germany; 9 The Figurative Tradition in Early Twentieth-Century Sculpture; 10 Cubism; 11 Futurism, Abstraction in Russia, and de Stijl (was "Towards Abstraction"); 12 Early Twentieth-Century Architecture; 13 From Fantasy to Dada and the New Objectivity; 14 The School of Paris After World War I (was "...Between the Wars"); 15 Surrealism; 16 Modern Architecture Between the Wars; 17 International Abstraction Between the Wars; 18 American Art Before World War II; 19 Abstract Expressionism and the New American Sculpture; 20 Postwar European Art; 21 Pop Art and Europe's New Realism; 22 Sixties Abstraction; 23 The Second Wave of International Style Architecture; 24 The Pluralistic Seventies; 25 Postmodernism in Architecture; 26 The Retrospective Eighties (25 & 26 were swapped); 27 Resistance and Resolution (was "Epilogue").
As pluses, I have been unable to find any other book of this scope from the 1800s to the present, and the text is perhaps somewhat easier to read than in the previous edition. As minuses: (1) There is little discussion of artists with heavy non-Western influences, with some exceptions (such as Cai Guoqiang [China], Ghada Amer [Egypt], Shirin Neshat [Iran], Mariko Mori [Japan], Yinka Shonibare [Nigeria], Shazia Sikander [Pakistan], Mona Hatoum [Lebanon], and Yasumasa Morimura [Japan], the last two having been in the previous edition). (2) The 4th edition had color plates on pages separate from the black-and-white plates, with two distinct types of paper. All pages of the current book are on the same type of paper, obviating the need for separate color plates; however, many of the plates that were B&W in the 4th ed. are still B&W, which leads to an odd effect. What is the purpose of having two Matisses in color and one B&W on page 274; one work by Jasper Johns in color and one B&W on page 486; etc.? I would have liked to see less B&W. (3) Although the paintings are reproduced well, the quality of some color photographs is pathetic. Case in point: Jeff Wall's "A Sudden Gust of Wind (After Hokusai) on page 760, which looks pretty much the same in the previous edition. It's as though someone deliberately underexposed the photo and gave it a green color cast, compared with reproductions in other books. Other bad examples of color correction (guys, use some Photoshop!) can be found on pages 98, 341, 451, 490, 543, 544, 564, 614, and 633.
(4) Finally, I don't see a definite improvement in coverage over the 4th edition. Let's take chapter 26 ("The Retrospective Eighties") as an example. Compared with the corresponding chapter in the 4th edition, the following artists were deleted: Arneson, Burton, Greenblat, Hodgkin, Hunt, Kapoor, Otterness, Saar, Snyder, and Wilmarth. The following artists are still in the chapter, but with fewer works of art reproduced: Arnajani, Baselitz, Bleckner, Chia, Clemente, Cragg, Cucchi, Fischl, Haring, Holzer, Levine, Lipski, Lupertz, Murray, Penck, Pfaff, Puryear, Scharf, Scully, Sherman, and Spero. The following artists have been added: Antoni, Bickerton, Fleury, McCollum, Osorio, Prince, Steinbach, Taaffe, and Wong. So although this edition is "different," it's not necessarily "better." If you already have the 4th, you don't necessarily need the 5th ed.
But if you have only the 3rd edition, or have never had a previous edition, buy the book from Amazon.com!
BTW, it's unclear whether the Prentice-Hall people have read their own book. Their Web site says the book uses "full color throughout," that chapter 27 on Resistance and Resolution "includes a section on Feminism," and that the "Section in Chapter 24 on Art and Politics brings the story of modern art up to the year 2000." None of these statements is entirely true. The first I've already discussed; feminist art is largely covered on pages 599-604 in chapter 24, with only one feminist artist (Amer) in chapter 27; and pages 683-684 in chapter 25 cover post-9/11 work from 2002, with the sections on politics in chapters 24 and 27 dealing with the 70's and 90's respectively.

engaging!

As a student of Art History, I applaud this book for its diversity and comprehensiveness. There were portions of modern art history that I did not look upon favorably, but now have a great appreciation for after reading this text. It sometimes references pictures that are not in the text itself, but the book is generally liberal with visual references.

I'd reccomend this for any student or art history buff who wants the big picture on art in the modern era.

a must-have for your art book collection

This was excellent. Very comprehensive, to say the least, and very well organized. This is my only book from art class that I actually sustained my interest! Definitely worth it.

Text book is good; Otis Access is not good

The text book provides a great deal of important information regarding the financial world and introduces you to trading various financial products. It is by no means a how-to book on trading but it does give you a look into fundamentals that anyone looking to build a portfolio should learn.

As for the "Otis Access", I see no benefit to buying a so-called, "trading simulator" if you can't actually simulate actual trading. The only thing this product does is allow you to place trades within real-world data. But there's a difference between "real-world data trading" and "real-time trading". With "real-world data trading" there is a time delay from when you place the order and when it is actually executed in the market. This is useless. You will never have any idea whether your trade will actually be successful in a real-time environment. So, for example, you place a Futures trade and yet the program doesn't place your order until the end of the day, what possible use could this be to you? None. No use at all.

However, with "real-time trading", you see the market data in real-time mode and are actually able to place a simulated trade in real-time as well. This way, you can work on developing a trading strategy and implement your techniques in order to actually be able to someday trade using real money. The Otis simulator will never help you do anything beyond making blind paper trades.

There are other platforms out there that are inexpensive or, even free, that will help you develop a trading strategy using real-time data and order execution. Sadly, Otis is not even close to being it.

There isn't even any product support for this bloated, worthless nonsense.

Save your money and stay far away from the Otis Access part of this package.

This is an advanced textbook. I was a little disappointed with the size of the book and was hoping for a bigger number of pages covering some material in more details. That being said the author does a good job of providing a good reference list at the end of each chapter for further research.

A good book for students who do not like maths

It is a good book with clear illustration of the statistics. It begin with simple statistics and then move on to more difficult analysis. Before I get this book, whenever I pick up a book about statistics, I feel fate. Then I close it immediately after reading 1 to 2 pages, and never pick it up again. However, for this particular book, I've read more than half (about 300 pages)and still want to finish it. After you've read one page, you are eager to read another and another. So, I highly recommend this book to undergradaute and postgraduate students.

About the Author

Michael C. McKenna is Thomas G. Jewell Professor of Reading at the University of Virginia.  He has authored, coauthored, or edited 15 books and more than 100 articles, chapters, and technical reports on a range of literacy topics. His books include The Literacy Coach’s Handbook: A Guide to Research-Based Reform, Differentiated Reading Instruction: Strategies for the Primary Grades, and The Literacy Coaching Challenge, with Sharon Walpole. Other books include Assessment for Reading Instruction (with Steven Stahl), Help for Struggling Readers, Issues and Trends in Literacy Education, with Richard Robinson, among others.

 

Richard D. Robinson is Professor of Literacy Education at the University of Missouri—Columbia. He is the author of 10 books and numerous articles on many areas of literacy development. His national prominence in the field of literacy has been acknowledged through many awards, such as the William H. Byler Distinguished Professor Award.

Easy read..

This book is set up very well--each chapter begins with a graphic organizer for the chapter contents and then each section is bolded. The information is timely and includes references. There are plenty of empirically-based instructional methods that can be utilized immediately. The tone is conversational yet scholarly; a pleasure to read!
This book is a must for any teacher who wishes to incorporate reading and writing strategies for increased engagement and comprehension in his or her specific content area. Please note that this book is NOT set up as lessons for specific content areas--it is overall strategies that can be used in ANY content area. Again, there is no guesswork here--the strategies are proven winners compiled in one lovely volume!

Insight That Even Experienced Teachers Might Have Overlooked

This well-written book provides comprehensive strategies for prereading, guided reading, and postreading. Both authors are experienced educators who have contributed widely in the field. In this work, they provide an overview to each of the five sections in the book, visual displays that are easy to follow, and a summary to each chapter that drives home the major themes.

In the introductory part of the book, the philosophy behind the book is revealed. The authors emphasize they believe in the connection between content learning and the construction of comprehension by actively engaged students. Students are encouraged to extend their knowledge in the process. As scholars, McKenna and Robinson note, "we have tried very hard to include only those recommendations that have been validated through research and that teachers tend to regard as practical" (p. ix).

Appropriate "sound bite" type quotes fill the margins of the book. In fact, the authors talk about using such quotes in classes. Objectives for each chapter are clearned identified. For each technique presented, clear explanations are offered. There are also extensive examples from which to draw. This is a positive resource for any teacher interested in helping students construct meaning using methods that have been successfully used by other educators.

A great way to prepare for reading in the content areas.

No matter what subject you teach, you can use this book to prepare yourself to help your students understand what they are reading. There are ample examples and techniques that are real world tested and completely helpful in running a classroom that understands what they read. I am a teacher of Biology and Chemistry, which are highly complicated subjects and this book helps me as a teacher to not only get my students reading in the subject area but helps my students understand the complicated material that goes along with these subject areas. I recommend this book to both teachers and pre-service teachers who are interested in involving reading in their classroom.. This book is also very important considering Common Core standards, which it touches on within. I also recommend Janet Allen's "Tools for Teaching Content Literacy." They go together wonderfully. There even is a book called "More Tools for Teaching Content Literacy," by Janet Allen that is helpful too. Using these three texts can help any teacher of any subject become a reading classroom. I recommend this book to anyone, it is very helpful and interesting; and an easy read.
