About the Author

Charles B. Fleddermann is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico. All of his degrees are in electrical engineering: his Bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame, and the Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prof. Fleddermann developed an engineering ethics course for his department in response to the ABET requirement to incorporate ethics topics into the undergraduate engineering curriculum. Engineering Ethics was written as a vehicle for presenting ethical theory, analysis, and problem solving to engineering undergraduates in a concise and readily accessible way.

It's a book filled to the brim with case studies. Great for ethics classes, and pretty interesting also. Got it for my PHILOS 1332 class during OSU's May Mester.

Good, solid book on an important subject !!

Very much enjoyed the book and found myself thinking I was glad to have stumbled into it. I don't think I agreed in all cases with his judgments, but I may have been the problem there.

Only criticism: much of his instruction was built around the very large, public case histories. The real challenge to engineering ethics are those that arise from the smaller, everyday challenges in workplace culture, personal habits of practice, etc. Would have liked a little more emphasis here.

Ten years have passed since the third edition of this book appeared. The last decade has been an eventful one for the peoples of the British Isles: The longest serving prime minister of the century was removed from power by her own colleagues; a moribund Labor Party, out of office for almost two decades, revived to score its greatest electoral triumph under the youngest man to serve as prime minister since 1812; after 30 years of sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland, hopes for a lasting peace blossomed on a rainy Easter Sunday; the Channel Tunnel, the fear and folly of an earlier age when France and Britain were enemies, was completed by the joint effort of the two nations; the tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales, was greeted with such an outpouring of public grief that age-old stereotypes about British reserve vanished in a fortnight.

The narrative of recent developments will constitute part of any new edition. But history is about continuities as well as new departures. This is true not only in the making of history but in the writing of it. It is in that spirit that I carry on the work of Clayton and David Roberts. Their work has succeeded in providing a master narrative of the key events of England's history while not neglecting the impact that these events have had on Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. This narrative has not ignored the interpretive dimension at the core of the historical enterprise but has incorporated the fresh perspective and methods that recent scholarship has brought to the study of England's past. Their graceful prose, trenchant analysis, and unobtrusive learning are virtues I can only hope to emulate.

if you are like me, and just look at the picture and ...

It is not every day that you can get in a single place the most important documents in American history, especIally if you are just a reader and not a college student taking American History 400, in which case this is, or should be, your textbook, or at least required reading,
How many times, as you read U. S. history, you see a reference to the Virginia Religious Liberty Act. the Articles of Confederation,the Missouri compromise, the Kentucky or the Virginia Declarations, the Compromise of 1850, and you wish you could read the text of just what the author is referring to. Well, here they all are, and you can make up your mind whether you agree or not with the interpretation of the author who refers to them. It is a treasure for the non-historian who does not have access to the original sources.
Be careful, though: Amazon puts a picture of the two volumes of the 'Documents' even when the seller offers only one for sale, and, if you are like me, and just look at the picture and you think that you are ordering both volumes, you may receive only one, and the seller may tell you that sometimes Amazon pictures do not correspond to the item as described by the seller.

A must-have for all American History students

This is the best book I've ever used for writing history reports. It has documents about every major event in the history of the United States, and many letters and speeches on topics you can't find in any other books at the local library. It contains 633 entries, starting with "Privileges and Perogatives Granted to Columbus. April 30, 1492," and ending with the "Civil Rights Act of 1957. August 30, 1957." Again, it's a must-have for history students.

About the Author
"Serope Kalpakjian" taught and conducted research at the Illinois Institute of Technology for 38 years prior to his retirement in 2001 as professor emeritus of mechanical and materials engineering. After graduating from Robert College (high honors), Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he joined Cincinnati Milacron, where he was a research supervisor in advanced metal-forming processes. He is the author of numerous technical papers and several articles in handbooks and encyclopedias and has edited various conference proceedings. In addition, Professor Kalpakjian has served on the editorial bards of several journals and the Encyclopedia Americana and is the coauthor of "Lubricants and Lubrication in Metalworking Operations." Both first editions of his textbooks, "Manufacturing Processes for Engineering Materials and Manufacturing Engineering and Technology," have received the M. Eugene Merchant Manufacturing Textbook Award. He is a Life Fellow of the ASME, Fellow of the SME, Fellow and Life Member of ASM International, emeritus member of CIRP (International Institution for Production Engineering Research), and a founding member and past president of NAMRI/SME.

Among the awards Professor Kalpakjian has received are the Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation Best Paper Award (1966), an Excellence in Teaching Award from IIT (1970), the Centennial Medallion from the ASME (1980), the International Education Award from the SME (1989), a Person of the Millennium Award from IIT (1999), and the Albert Easton White Distinguished Teacher Award from ASM International (2000). SME named the Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award afterProfessor Kalpakjian for the year 2002.

"Steven R. Schmid" is an associate professor with the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, University of Notre Dame, where he teaches and performs research in the general areas of manufacturing, machine design, and tribology. As the director of the Manufacturing Tribology Laboratory at the university, he oversees industry- and government-funded research on a variety of manufacturing topics, including tribological issues in rolling, forging and sheet-metal forming, polymer processing, medical-device design and manufacture, and nanomechanics.

He received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (with honors) and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, both in mechanical engineering, from Northwestern University. He has received numerous awards, including the John T Parsons Award from the SME (2000), the Newkirk Award from the ASME (2000), and the Kaneb Center Teaching Award (2000). He is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREERS Award (1996) and an ALCOA Foundation Award (1994). Dr. Schmid is the author of over 50 technical papers; has edited three conference proceedings; has coauthored two books, "Fundamentals o f Machine Elements and Manufacturing Engineering and Tecbnology;" and has contributed two chapters to the "CRC Handbook of Modern Tribology." He serves on the Tribology Division Executive Committee of the ASME, is an associate editor of the "Journal o f Manufacturing Science and Engineering," and is a registered professional engineer and certified manufacturing engineer.

The emphasis of this book seems to be more on the basic mechanics of the different processes it describes. That's fine, and important to understand manufacturing, but...
BUT, he gives very little attention to how the material being processed responds to the processing. Without a better understanding of the microstructural effects -- and ensuing DEfects -- it may be too hard to troubleshoot the processes described in this book.
My professor was flipping through the early chapters of this book (where the materials issues are presented) and declared them "cheesy."
So, to sum up: this good book becomes great by combining it with other books/courses/professors/etc that will interject materials issues into this books discussion of the mechanical issues.

Incredible content, poor binder quality

I have not had a chance to really delve into the content. But paging through the book, I am very excited to go deeper. The book seems to touch on almost all mfg processes, even addressing material behavior, metallurgy, tribology, and some other wide ranging subjects that affect manufacturing.

That being said, I bought this book "new" from Amazon and it has several gouges on the front and back cover. Also the back cover hinge looks like someone took a knife to it so that there's only the inside glued paper that's holding the hard cardboard onto the book. Never seen anything like this from Amazon.

About the Author

Dr. Robert T. Grauer, Creator of the Exploring Series

Bob Grauer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Information Systems at the University of Miami, where he is a multiple winner of the Outstanding Teaching Award in the School of Business, most recently in 2009. He has written numerous COBOL texts and is the vision behind the Exploring Office series, with more than three million books in print. His work has been translated into three foreign languages and is used in all aspects of higher education at both national and international levels. Bob Grauer has consulted for several major corporations including IBM and American Express. He received his Ph.D. in operations research in 1972 from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.

Mary Anne has more than 12 years of educational experience. She is currently adjunct faculty at

Gwynedd-Mercy College and Montgomery County Community College. She has also taught at Bucks

teaching, she was vice president at Shearson Lehman in the Municipal Bond Investment Banking

What a surprise

I searched for days on the internet for a book that wasn't ridiculously expensive. When I found this one on Amazon for the price, I was prepared to except a used one, but when it arrived it was a new book. Wow! This was really, really inexpensive.

Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has taught in

STUDY TIPS

Use of this review book should help simplify your study. To make the most of your valuable study time, also follow these simple but important suggestions:

• Use a weekly calendar to schedule study sessions.
• Outline the timeframes for all of your activities (home, school, appointments, etc.) on a weekly calendar.
• Find the "holes" in your calendar—the times in which you can plan to study. Add study sessions to the calendar at times when you can expect to be mentally alert and follow it!
• Create the optimal study environment.
• Eliminate external sources of distraction, such as television, telephone, etc.
• Eliminate internal sources of distraction, such as hunger, thirst, or dwelling on items or problems that cannot be worked on at the moment.
• Take a break for 10 minutes or so after each hour of concentrated study both as a reward and an incentive to keep studying.
• Use pre-reading strategies to increase comprehension of chapter material.
• Skim the headings in the chapter (because they identify chapter content).
• Read the definitions of key terms, which will help you learn new words to comprehend chapter information.
• Review all graphic aids (figures, tables, boxes) because they are often used to explain important points in the chapter.
• Read the chapter thoroughly but at a reasonable speed.
• Comprehension and retention are actually enhanced by not reading too slowly.
• Do take the time to reread any section that is unclear to you.
• Summarize what you have learned.
• Use questions supplied with this book, CD-ROM, and companion website to test your recall of chapter content.
• Review again any sections that correspond to questions you answered incorrectly or incompletely.

TEST TAKING STRATEGIES

Use the following strategies to increase your success on multiple-choice nursing tests or examinations:

• Get sufficient sleep and have something to eat before taking a test. Take deep breaths during the test as needed. Remember, the brain requires oxygen and glucose as fuel. Avoid concentrated sweets before a test, however, to avoid rapid upward and then downward surges in blood glucose levels.
• Read each question carefully, identifying the stem, the four options, and any key words or phrases in either the stem or options.
• Key words in the stem such as "most important" indicate the need to set priorities, since more than one option is likely to contain a statement that is technically correct.
• Remember that the presence of absolute words such as "never" or "only" in an option is more likely to make that option incorrect.
• Determine who is the client in the question; often this is the person with the health problem, but it may also be a significant other, relative, friend, or another nurse.
• Decide whether the stem is a true response stem or a false response stem. With a true response stem, the correct answer will be a true statement, and vice-versa.
• Determine what the question is really asking, sometimes referred to as the issue of the question. Evaluate all answer options in relation to this issue, and not strictly to the "correctness" of the statement in each individual option.
• Eliminate options that are obviously incorrect, then go back and reread the stem. Evaluate the remaining options against the stem once more.
• If two answers seem similar and correct, try to decide whether one of them is more global or comprehensive. If the global option includes the alternative option within it, it is likely that the more global response is the correct answer.

THE NCLEX-RN LICENSING EXAMINATION

The NCLEX-RN licensing examination is a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) that ranges in length from 75 to 265 individual (stand-alone) test items, depending on individual performance during the examination. Upon graduation from a nursing program, successful completion of this exam is the gateway to your professional nursing practice. The blueprint for the exam is reviewed and revised every three years by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing according to the results of a job analysis study of new graduate nurses (practicing within the first six months after graduation). Each question on the exam is coded to one Client Need Category and one or more Integrated Concepts and Processes.

Client Need Categories

There are 4 categories of client needs, and each exam will contain a minimum and maximum percent of questions from each category. Each major category has subcategories within it. The Client Need categories according to the NCLEX-RN Test Plan effective April 2001 are as follows:

• Safe, Effective Care Environment
• Management of Care (7-13%)
• Safety and Infection Control (5-11 %)
• Health Promotion and Maintenance
• Growth and Development Throughout the Lifespan (7-13%)
• Prevention and Early Detection of Disease (5-11 %)
• Psychosocial Integrity
• Coping and Adaptation (5-11%)
• Psychosocial Adaptation (5-11%)
• Physiological Integrity
• Basic Care and Comfort (7-13%)
• Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies (5-11%)
• Reduction of Risk Potential (12-18.%)
• Physiological Adaptation (12-18%)

Integrated Concepts and Processes

The integrated concepts and processes identified on the NCLEX-RN Test Plan effective April 2001, with condensed definitions, are as follows:

• Nursing Process: a scientific problem-solving approach used in nursing practice; consisting of assessment, analysis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
• Caring: client-nurse interaction(s) characterized by mutual respect and trust and directed toward achieving desired client outcomes.
• Communication and Documentation: verbal and/or nonverbal interactions between nurse and others (client, family, health care team); a written or electronic recording of activities or events that occur during client care.
• Cultural Awareness: knowledge and sensitivity to the client's beliefs/values and how these might impact on the client's healthcare experience.
• Self-Care: assisting clients to meet their health care needs, which may include maintaining health or restoring function.
• Teaching/Learning: facilitating client's acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that lead to behavior change.

  Excellent Study Aid!

  I love the Reviews and Rationales series of books and highly recommend them for all nursing students. After I go through my notes from class and the textbook, I use this book for review. It helps sum up all of the millions of pieces of information I have assimilated into one concise source. The review questions have proven to be extremely helpful in studying for exams as well. Similiar content questions have even appeared on our nursing school exams! I love the fact that they give you the rationale behind the answer and tell you how to reason your way to the answer if you are unsure. Each chapter has 20 questions, and then there are 30 more for each chapter on the enclosed CD. They are great for NCLEX prep.

  These books are great. They outline everything without all of the fluff. The answers to the questions tell you which words to look for so you know how to answer those tricky Nursing test questions. They give you the rationales for the right AND wrong answers.

  As much as I love my psych text book, I found this book to be very helpful as a Cliff Notes-type supplement. It is concise and easy to read, and the CD that goes along with it works in my Mac and is totally awesome! You can go through pre and post test questions on line, just like within the chapters, as well as check out some NCLEX stuff. All of this was very helpful for exams and just plain learning.
