About the Author

Dr. Janet Prichard is an assistant professor at Bryant College where she teaches web design and development, object-oriented computing, operating systems, and data structures courses. She has a B.A. in mathematics from Providence College, and earned her M.S. and Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Rhode Island. Her academic interests include real-time databases, database query languages, object-oriented analysis and design methodologies, database standards, client-server models, and Internet security. Dr. Prichard is the lead author of the Third Edition of Data Abstraction and Problem Solving with Java.

Frank M. Carrano is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of Rhode Island. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Syracuse University in 1969. His interests include data structures, computer science education, social issues in computing, and numerical computation. Professor Carrano is particularly interested in the design and delivery of undergraduate courses in computer science. He has authored several well-known computer science textbooks for undergraduates.

One of the worst programming books ever.

This book was used for a 200 level computer science course at my school and it multiplyed my level of frustration by a factor of 2. There is way too much pseudocode in this book. While I see the importance of pseudocode when actually developing your application, I don't think it's quite practical for the purposes of teaching. About half of the book's chapters will create entire methods and classes in pseudocode only to have that same code rewritten in actual Java syntax one or two pages later. In my opinion it just seems a waste of page space and time since you could easily write the proper code and just comment what concept or idea should be going on in real Java syntax. Often times, the authors will start a sentence with phrases such as, "Clearly...", "While this implementation is pretty straightfoward...", and "Obviously..." Then when I start reading the actual paragraph that's supposed to be obvious, confusion would set in, and other choice words come to my head that would describe the clarity of the writing. I have a feeling the only reason why the computer science department at my school chose this book is because someone knew one of the publishing rep's and that's why it's been used for so long. If you want good books on how to actually program and work with data structures on a theoretical level, then I suggest Data Structres & Algorithms in Java by Robert LaFore. His writing is way more concise and I found it solidified the material in about half the time as when I was trying to read this book. In fact, I would say almost any programming books published by Sams' Publishing are really quite good. I picked up Teach Yourself C in 21 days a few years ago, and it was super easy to understand what it is I was typing. I am not the only one who has the belief. One of my friends in the graduate program pretty much said the same thing and said he didn't even read the book when he took the same class as an undergraduate.

Good for people who love to read and who know programming fairly well

I picked this up because my school requires this data structure book. Well, this book is fine overall. I took a look at a few chapters, and I did not have many huge problems. So let's talk about the pros and cons of this book.

Pros:
The author explains everything in a very detailed way, which is good for people who don't really have good background in programming and problem solving.

Cons:
You won't find any complete code in this book since the author only gives the main part of the program, which means you need to develop the program yourself. Even in the source code the author provides, there is not any complete code that you can run in IDE. So, if you don't have a strong Java background, this book might be a little tough for you.

Great Book

I used this book for Data Structures and Algorithms course in computer science undergraduate curriculum. Data Abstraction and Problem solving with Java is a great introduction into the field of theoretical computer science and is very encouraging. The structure and organization of the material is great. There are virtually no misprints/mistakes in the text or problems. To be honest, this book changed my study methods for most of my other courses (not necessarily comp sci related). If you are serious about studying computer science, this book is for you.

Great AP world history text

I teach Advanced Placement (AP) world history to 10th grade students. We use this exact text and it has been a good text for them, though it is a LOT of reading. Text is set up well and covers each of the AP world history time units across each of the major civilizations at the time.
Units are
Foundations (8000 BC to 600 AD)
Classical (600 AD to 1450 AD)
Post-Classical (1450-1750)
Early Modern (1750-1914)
Modern (1914 to present)

There are older editions of this book (this is the 5th edition), but there are changes with each edition. If you wanted an older version for the student to underline and highlight, they are similar enough to this one if it is what they are using in class.

Stearns does a good job of preparing the students for the AP exam which can earn them potential college credit for the ap class at the high school level.

Long, wordy, disorganized book

Having used this book, I can say that while it is a textbook and has information, it is lengthy and disorganized. They de-emphasize certain things too much and put too much pressure on others, especially specific topics. There are some "in depth" sections that are helpful, but I found that they would bring up the same event in little pieces and really does NOT serve its purpose as a world history course. Focusing too much on the details, this book has no system of organization and does not provide a global scale or give any sort of sense of world history.

In closing, I do not recommend this book. I have had many frustrations with the writing style, immense detail, and lack of clarity. There are other, more organized, more accurate books out there for AP World History.

Stearns' top notch books for AP

This is not the newest edition, but it certainly suffices for anyone who may need to save a little money and wants to work toward the AP World History exam. I have been teaching with the Strayer textbook for three years. It is also excellent, but it was not an AP version per se.

Although the school where I teach has adopted an e-text (and required all students to buy the 7th edition for I-Pad, in my mind Ill probably always lean toward a printed textbook. This book + a newer edition of it will be my main planning and organizing tools for the ninth grade students I teach, even for those who won't necessarily go on the AP level and take the exam.

About the Author
Jane W. Ball graduated from the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing, and subsequently received a B.S. from the Johns Hopkins University. She worked in the surgical, emergency, and outpatient units of the Johns Hopkins Children's Medical and Surgical Center, first as a staff nurse and then as a pediatric nurse practitioner. This began her career as a pediatric nurse and advocate for children's health needs. Jane obtained both a master of public health and doctor of public health degree from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health with a focus on maternal and child health. After graduation she became the chief of child health services for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Health. In this capacity she oversaw the state-funded well-child clinics and explored ways to improve education for the state's community health nurses. After relocating to Texas, she joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Arlington School of Nursing to teach community pediatrics to registered nurses returning to school for a BS.N. During this time she became involved in writing her first textbook, Mosby's Guide to Physical Examination, which is currently in its sixth edition. After relocating to the Washington, D.C., area, she joined Children's National Medical Center to manage a federal project to teach instructors of emergency medical technicians from all states about the special care children need during an emergency. Exposure to the shortcomings of the emergency medical services system in the late 1980s with regard to pediatric care was a career-changing event. With federal funding, she developed educational curricula for emergency medical technicians and emergencynurses to help them provide improved care for children. A textbook entitled Pediatric Emergencies, A Manual for Prehospital Providers was developed from these educational ventures. For 15 years she has managed the federally funded Emergency Medical Services for Children National Resource Center. As executive director, Dr. Ball directed the provision of consultation and resource development for state health agencies, health professionals, families, and advocates about successful methods to improve the health care system so that children get optimal emergency care in all health care settings. . She recently left this position to devote more time to writing and to become a consultant on emergency medical services and state trauma system development. Ruth C. McGillis Bindler received her B.S.N. from Cornell. University-New York Hospital School of Nursing in New York. She worked in oncology nursing at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and then moved to Wisconsin and became a public health nurse in Dane County, Wisconsin. Thus began her commitment to work with children as she visited children and their families at home, and served as a school nurse for several elementary, middle, and high schools. Due to this interest in child healthcare needs, she earned her MS. in child development from the University of Wisconsin. A move to Washington State was accompanied by a new job as a faculty member at the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education in Spokane, Washington. Dr. Bindler has been fortunate to be involved for over 30 years in the growth of this nursing education consortium, which is a combination of public and private universities and colleges and is now the WashingtonState University/Intercollegiate College of Nursing. She has taught theory and clinical courses in child health nursing, cultural diversity and health, graduate research, pharmacology, and assessment, as well as serving as lead faculty for child health nursing. She is presently interim associate dean for the college's graduate programs. Her first professional book, "Pediatric Medications," was published in 1981, and she has continued to publish articles and books in the areas of pediatric medications and pediatric health. Research efforts are focused in the area of childhood obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular risk factors in children. Ethnic diversity has been another theme in her work. She facilitates international and other diversity experiences for students and performs research with culturally diverse children. Dr. Bindler believes that her role as a faculty member has enabled her to learn continually, to foster the development of students in nursing, and to participate fully in the profession of nursing. In addition to teaching, research, publication, and leadership, she enhances her life by service in several professional and community activities, and by activities with her family.

No access for mynursinglab!

This book is listed as being part of the my lab series, but it has no access to the mynursinglab. You either have to purchase it separately on the website, or purchase this book in the ebook version, where it does come with it. They should really take the my lab series off the description.

If you must do Peds, this works!

This textbook is easy to read, organized very well, excellent graphics, pics of real stuff. I am child-free and wasn't looking forward to doing my Peds section of nursing school but it wasn't bad at all. The book was very good, and I'm a student that reads everything. A lot of students don't, but, I have used my text extensively. One caveat is that the book can be used with publisher website, which offers a study tool called My Nursing Lab and has lots of questions to answer. I found MANY discrepanies between the answers to those questions and what I found in the textbook. This is kinda a big deal because when one bothers memorizing something as fact and misses it on a test question later, fire will come out of one's head and she will spend days questioning her decision to go to nursing school in her 40s while her husband eats Subway three days in a row. . Proofreading and double, triple checking answer keys makes a difference in students' lives. I also appreciated the many references to alternative parenting/lifestyles, kids' needs who may be LGBT, and discussion of the challenges faced by differing socioeconomic status. No blame or judgment tone as there are in many other texts. The book itself is very good, didn't put me to sleep once!

The book came in the condition described. It is an easy read but it would have been nice if the authors incorporated more pictures of abnormalities. The website wasn't helpful, you have to pay money for the extra material.

Do not BUY SPSS from Amazon

Wate of money! It took three weeks for the Student Version of SPSS to come and when it came it was opened version 17, when I ordered version 18. It did not install, and now I am basically screwed for my class. In the middle of the semester I have to find a new version quickly. Please people DO NOT BUY SPSS from Amazon scammers. If there was a zero raiting i would give it a zero.

Not so great

I purchased this to save myself several trips to my college computer lab on the other side of town. It was for a basic statistics course in my MA program. While you can do something with it, I couldn't finish half of my assignments, which were basic statistics, because the functions aren't included in this version. It shouldn't be called a student version considering it can't do half the assignments given to students.

Disappointing. Later versions have more kinks worked out. I tried every tech support I could find and no go when trying to draw charts with this program. People I know said it didn't work well on Windows either.
